Hello Friends,
I am a SAP-Basis consultant and my company wants me to shift to SAP-BI. Can you please tell me if this is a good move and if anyone has actually moved from Basis to BI please do share your experience. Let me know approximate time it would take for a SAP-Basis consultant to shift to SAP-BI.
Are there any techniques which will help me in smooth transition to this module.
Thanks!!

Hi Zaheer,
Welcome to BI! SAP BI is a very good field and going forward, going to get better! I have seen people move from different fields to BI. I guess you'll be aware of the transports being done between BI systems as you have worked in BASIS? BI being more of a techno-functional stream rather than core technical coding stuff, I think you should manage to cope with it soon enough. There's more of understanding the business, than just coding. For smooth transitioning, I would advice you to go through some basic books (viz. Mastering BW), help.sap.com, sdn, etc.. Also, the more you practice, the better it is for you.
All the best!

Dhaval,
There should have been a like button for people to like comments (of course without any points: points should not be the sole reason some people get active in the forum) as in facebook.
Btw, I liked your crisp comment.
Apart, I do not know why people come directly and ask if something is good for them or something is bad for them without even reading the comments above or even giving their full details or doing a web search. This is a not so good culture I have seen more in an SAP forum than elsewhere.
Just mt two cents.
Thanks.

Hi Zaheer,
Welcome to SAP BI forums.
First of all there many people who have changed from one module to another module in SAP. You can see many ABAPers who shift to BI. To get into BI first you need to have knowledge of SAP BW, once you learn BW then you can go to BI. There are few differences between them. I think you can easily get accoustomed with. In BW/BI also we have some authorizations. In BW/BI there are three main areas. 1.Modeling 2. Reporting and 3. Extraction. In future the reporting that is the Bex part will get changed to SAP BO according to the road map. Once you learn BI then you can shift to SAP BPC which is a part of EPM (enterprise performance management) which have BPC in the front end and BI at the back end. Its always good to learn new modules to keep ourselves tuned in.
Hope it helps.
Regards,
Raghu.

Maybe you could sketch a brief learning path/ curiculum for the beginners in BW? I would love to read and follow it:))

Hi All,
Thank you for your valuable inputs. I agree BI is the way to go considering the changing market requirements, that's one of the reasons I have forced the change from Basis to BI 😛
I was hoping to hear from someone who has actually moved from Basis to BI module or maybe from someone who shifted to BI from any other module. He would have a clearer perspective to offer us. About the road map definitely I will prepare one after I collect some more information and chalk my transition.
So if there is anyone who has actually moved to BI from another module please post some information here that would be really appreciated.
Thank you again for your time.

Maybe you can share what do you expect to be doing after the switch. What do you think will come?
I can recommend you to find a list of BW/BI roles and check which one is suitable for you. I remember I have seen such a doc somewhere. Maybe somebody can help you find it or you can ask if anybody can help you find it in BW forum.
From such a list you can assume what qualification will you need in your future BI career and would understand where to start to get these. Otto

Thank you for all your replies. I guess I need to work out the road map on my own. Closing thread..

Dear Zaheer,
You are very fortunate your company is offering you to move to new technology. I will advice you not to miss this opporunity.
I had asked this to my company on my own but they didnt provided me that opporunity.
Just grab it and see if they are sending you for BI Certification course. It will be bonus for you.
