You would require to know how SD works like

Inquiry , Quotation , Sales Order and Delivery and billing and Invoice verfication .. etc

You can google or search in sdn as SD flow .. for more information

what are the major reports and their Tables / t-codes to compare data with BW

These are important to know when having discussion with clients and to trouble shoot the problems if any in BW

I would say it's quite important as there are many mid/large companies which are based heavily on sales. Generally any functional knowledge would be an added value, depending on what client/project you normally get.
