Yes, considering your Networking background, SAP BASIS is the ideal choice.

I have written an article on this on IT Toolbox. I'm in the process of creating a blog on SCN and will reenter it at that point and revise, but in the mean time you can find the original article at http://it.toolbox.com/wiki/index.php/What_is..._SAP_NetWeaver_System_Administration_(a.k.a._SAP_Basi....

In a nutshell, SAP Netweaver System Administration (a.k.a. SAP Basis) is very similar to other types of system administration with which you may be familiar. Whether you administer an operating system, database, or to a limited extent, network devices; you perform many of the same activities.

For example:

creating users

creating and assigning security authorizations to user accounts

installation of software

configuration of software via text based configuration files

patching of software

performance monitoring/tuning

network connectivity implementation/monitoring/troubleshooting

configuring/monitoring/troubleshooting connectivitiy between different components

creating/maintaining printers/queues

monitoring/adjusting space/quotas

etc.

If these tasks are familiar and comfortable to you, then you will learn the specifics of performing these tasks (and other SAP specific tasks not mentioned) pretty easily.

Hopefully this is helpful to you.

Best regards,
