SAP sustainability and career

Hello all,

I'm new to the SAP community network so hope this is the right place to ask this question....

I'm currently in a Master's MIS program in the US (I'm a domestic student btw).  At my university, a number of big four consulting companies come to recruit students.  Most of these students then get put through 4 weeks of SAP training and begin their careers as consultants.  I have been interested in this path for a while now, but have some concerns.  As I would most likely be doing SAP functional consulting, my questions pertain to that area.

As SAP pros, do you feel that you are tied down to the technology? If SAP went under and everyone stopped using it, do you feel you would be able to find a similar job? Or if you wanted to move away from SAP and start using a different technology like Oracle for example, would you be able to?  Also, what does the career path look like for someone who exits SAP consulting?  Would he/she move into industry as, for example, a Business Process Analyst or Project Manager?

Thanks in advance for any insights you may have!

Hello Corey,

Some years ago, in Spain, I remember the recruiters were looking for SAP Consultants for other ERP solutions (Oracle, MBS, JDE...), in other countries I don't know, but I feel it has to be similar, and I have a former workmate working with Oracle, so, I believe it answers your first question.

SAP AG is a DAX company in Germany (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DAX), and between its clients, you can find the most important companies in all sector around the world. And after 12 years working with SAP, I don't believe that all customers of SAP (more than 60k if I am right about the number) change in a couple of weeks of ERP and other business solutions (BI, CRM...).

Finally, we fix our own limits. I began in an end user, I went to a consulting firm, and now I am in an end user as business analyst again. I has been in manufacturing and retail industry. I know the case of colleagues in other roles (production planners, MRP controllers, financial controllers or CFO, business analysts in end user companies, consultants with other ERP's, CIO's in end users, or Project Managers and so on). All depends if you are lucky during your first steps during your career.

I hope this helps you

Regards

Eduardo

Yes, this is very helpful! Thank you so much Eduardo! It's great to have insights from people who already have a number of years of SAP experience.
