Dear Experts,

Myself Daniel. I have done BE (e & c) and also MBA ( marketing & systems). Currently, I am  having 2 years experience in Sales Industry ( FMCG ). Thats one of the best FMCG Companies in the World. Now 2 years of Domain experience is not much i know, but, i believe i have have acquired a thorough knowledge in Sales. Now, i want to move on to SAP. My seniors are telling me to go for SD Module. I am thinking of admission in an authorized SAP training institute. People at the institute said that SD Module suits me best, but i want to know from you experts. Please guide me. They( the institute people) say that SD Module is the most demanding in terms of job opportunities. But having gone through different threads here its contradicting. The authorized SAP training institute guys are saying that they will also ASSIST me in getting a job but they cant GUARANTEE it. fare enough. But i want to know about the current job opportunities as a Certified SAP SD Consultant in todays market from experts.

Please help me in this, i would be grateful.

Thanks,

Dany

Daniel,

Job opportunities for freshers are less. It would be difficult to get the initial break!

For experience and competent SD consultants there are plenty of opportunities.

If you have the perseverance, financial support; then go for it.

This career would require constant hard work and an approach to give solutions to clients. This would remain a constant irrespective of the various phases of your career.

Thank You Sir for your reply, much obliged.

Job opportunities for freshers are less  i can understand that, but, if freshers do not get the opportunity then what is the need for "a certification"?  I mean for a guy who aspires to become a SAP Consultant ( SAP SD in my case ) with some domain experience, then he/ she has to first learn about working in SAP environment, he/ she has to have knowledge about SAP first then after acquiring such knowledge only he/ she can apply for consultant jobs right? Without prior experience working in SAP how can one get a SAP Consultant job? So a guy with a domain experience first would need to learn about SAP module(s) then it would be better for him/her to apply and get a job as a consultant. In this case he/she would always be "a fresher" first and then gather experience. A fresher can be more talented than an experienced guy who knows? Equal opportunities should be given to both.

Dany

Hi Daniel,

All your points are valid, but unfortunately that's the state of affairs as of now. Getting an SAP Certification is equivalent to "I have learnt this SAP course from this Authorized Training Center". And that's the end of it.

Not many companies will hire you just because you have an SAP Certification. Coupled with the fact that getting an SAP Certification is quite an expensive affair (at least in India - I don't know where you are from...) the entire idea is a joke IMO.

And from the looks of it, it doesn't look like SAP is going to change this trend any time soon. Before jumping into the Certification bandwagon, do read some of the agonizing tales of freshers like you, who have done Certification and still looking for a job.

Im not trying to discourage you, but you should know the facts before making a huge investment in terms of time and money so that you can make an informed decision.

Good Luck!

For example, follow the comments in this blog which also try to argue "Equal opportunities should be given to both." I've explained why (regardless of how things should be) why it isn't like that.

I've been working in IT for over 25 years in different roles, different technologies, and I can tell you that experience trumps training every time.

Dany,

Experienced SAP professional and a fresher (with or without certification) can not be given equal opportunities! and these two candidates are not equal, in terms of employer expectation, employee salary and output (adding value to employer) expectation!

The longer route is to work as a SAP end user. This will acclimatize you with SAP. And after few years you can take training and then struggle to become a junior consultant.

As I said before, perseverance - hit the books, forget the "dark realities". If you are very clear in your concepts in SD, companies will give you a chance. I have been a recruiter and I have hired candidates without SAP consulting experience but to convince me...in those cases needs something extra from the candidate!! (extra business scenario, extra mention of a functionality, etc.)

I've been following that blog for a while now. And I must admit, you have a LOT of patience!!!

Well, I really do feel for those people stuck in that position. But it's necessary to be realistic. It's like actors - not everyone can make it, even if they're incredibly talented. You need a measure of luck.

As they say in the classics, "Luck = opportunity + preparation".

All you can do is make sure you're prepared (by training, certification, etc) and keep on the lookout for opportunities. Something will turn up.

Maybe.

Hi TW

I have 12 yrs of domain experience in sales and wish to switch my career to SAP - SD consultant.

What wud my chances be to get a break in the industry ? I have a long cherished dream to make out a career in SAP but have been deferring it due to nice pay package in my current job. But now I want to quit and be where I want to be .

Would this be a smart move in the current context of Jobs in SAP - SD .

Wazid,

"smart move" is pretty subjective!

If your heart want you to go to SAP...go for it.

It might be difficult but every new thing is.

Work hard, be selfless - with respect to getting appreciation, praise, money etc. success will come to you.

And SAP SD is just great, as an experience (career)
