Hi All,

I have just started working in SAP Security for the last 4 months.

I was told that SAP Basis is much better than Security and has more opportunities and scope than it.

Moreover Security has less jobs, less demand and less projects.

Are they correct ?

I have just started my career and I am in a state of confusion.

Can anyone tell me the scope, opportunities and demand for both the modules.

Currently I am learning SAP HANA (openSAP.com) through videos.

Please help..

Hi Nitin,

Security in SAP doesn't need a new project to continue with. Security is a major concern for every organization. Since you are working in Security in SAP (ECC) you know the requirement from business coming to you/your team for new roles, modification of roles, issues with authorization etc, all this show that the need of security people will always be there. Once you are well experienced in ECC security you can go for SAP GRC and see how it takes you further in career. There is a lot of security work that can be done in SAP, for example - implementation of integration between GRC and IDM, security portals, providing security services for different modules etc.

In SAP Basis the team will be required to install/upgrade/maintain the SAP infrastructure but growth is not prompt as there are many people in this field and new implementation of SAP requires SAP Basis professionals. Further, it is difficult to express in Quantitative terms about the availability of jobs in BASIS/SECURITY.

PS. It is good to learn HANA for anyone who is working in either of the modules (BASIS/BI/BO/BODS/Developers/Modelere/Security), also one should learn it if they are interested in Databases as HANA is an in-memory database and the future implementations of SAP might be mainly involving HANA.

Cheers,

Hi Nagarajan,

Thanks for your inputs and valuable information.

I ll go with Security. I hope it will hold good for me.

Meanwhile I ll study HANA too as I do have interest in Database as I had done training in Oracle Database Administration. Though I have less knowledge of Data Modelling.. I would try to  procure information about it so that if in future I have to switch to HANA, it will be good for me.

Thanks.

You are welcome Nitin.

In security the most important things is to understand the different pieces and see where is the vulnerability and come up with the best way to address the risk.

Database  has always been one of my favourite. You can learn about HANA free of cost from SAP, go to https://open.sap.com and register for the course that is currently active and you can learn it for free and take assignments and give a final assessment upon the completion of course.

If I answered your query then please rate it and submit closure of query.

Good Luck.
