Hi Tejas,
Business Analyst (BA) is a very generic term. An individual can be a BA in one area say SAP CRM or SAP SD or SAP HCM etc.
Apart from his/her individual SAP knowledge, BA can have a DOMAIN Experience say in Finance, Purchase, Sales & Marketing etc. where he/she would have understand the business functionalities covering module specific scenarios. With the SAP knowledge, the BA can help in assessing the requirements, assessing the SAP functionalities which can be helpful to meet the business requirement.
Implementation Project -
BA plays a role starting from Requirement gathering phase till Support. He/She is like an intemidiator between the business stakeholder and the implemtation partner. They assist all the client interaction, document preparation, prototypes, solution offerings till sign-off. They also assist the program manager for the possible risk and also how these risks can be mitigated through various channels.
Support Project -
In support, the BA can definately use his/her SAP skill set alongwith the domain business knowledge. Support also involves interaction with the business user, understanding the requirement he/she has, propose solution adhering to the stipulated SLA etc.
In short, BA plays a pivotal role in any implementation or support project.
Hope this will be useful.
Thanks and Regards
DJ

Hi Tejas,
I agree with DJ, it's a generic term. In my opinion it depends on country, type and size of company, the critical module or functionality in this company, moreover, in the same country it depends on region or area, leadership style of managers and how they understand the famous 'geek gap'. As DJ says, it also depends of the moment in the implementation (analysis step, starting up, ...).
For instance, in huge companies, with IT teams, it's usual a specialist, with a strong functional background, without ABAP skills because they have SAP ABAP Developers in the IT team, where his or her expertise area is one module perhaps with an exposure to other modules.
In midsized companies he or she are generalists, perhaps without functional background and with strong ABAP skills and some functional modules (the most usual modules are SD, MM and FI).
But it's very difficult to have a unique description for this role. But for both is mandatory know some functionality, authorizations and how to manage relations with managers. In some cultures and moments, a proposal for improvement could be understood as a criticizing.
I hope this helps you
