Viswanath,
Ask the "WHY" question:
If you want to be a functional consultant (one day), then when ever you get a requirement or are fixing a bug, try to understand the functional side e.g. what is the business requirement?
If fixing a bug, why from business process perspective, this is a bug / incorrect?
I have seen ABAPers who don't want to know the "why", they just want the specifications, based on which they can do the coding. That is fine.
But you want to move over to the functional side, then ask the "why" (to the functional consultants)
Participate in forums:
In SD, MM forums; when ever there is a post / thread describing a process. Try to understand the process.
Read the basic theory:
Take e.g. Output, understand what is output. why it is needed
Don't go too detail but focus mainly on the business need of that particular functionality.

Hi,
can't you try the transition in the place you work? It' s not so credible to study on your own for 2 years and show up to an employer saying: "I m a SD functional..."- The risk is to be considered a fresher....

Hi,
I think that in your case the best solution is go ahead with abap and simultaneously ask to your company to start a training for example in SD or MM module.
