Pretty confused as to which module to choose in SAP?

Hi SAP Experts,

I joined a renowned MNC after graduating from college 1.5 years back.I initially got trained in SAP ABAP & Since there were no SAP projects when I finished the training,I was forced to work on mainframe testing for 7 months( Different domain altogether). Fortunately got released from that project and now I got an opportunity to work in a project which is implementing SAP CRM.I am finding it difficult to understand the concepts and not feeling comfortable with coding( Even-though I am from Information science background). I am not sure whether I can be a good developer or not.! I don't want to get back to Mainframe testing and I have a career aspiration in SAP.I am really confused!! Please suggest and advice as to which module I need to choose in SAP(SAP BASIS,SAP BI) in terms of career growth if I really find it hard to cope with coding stuff??

Also,I am gonna complete 2 years in my company very soon. So will it be a problem if I again switch from SAP CRM to SAP BASIS/Others??

Hi Govind,

Dont go with the wind. See even you know that no one in world knows you better than you yourself. If you talk about career growth in both the modules BI or BASIS both are fantastic even any other module. If you are good at basis attitude and just coz market could be booming with BI you went for BI. You might think that you had joined the best thing. But in reality you would have made a loss for your pocket. as being in Basis could have lead a better crop for you.

I know its difficult to identify in which thing I am the best. But if you spend a few hours for you not for BI and BASIS you will realise, that you are precious when in what place.

Do some RnD check which module does what. Talk people what is what rather then which is best. Coz man everything gets best when you know you are best for what.

In college I was a famous developer with too many application. when I ran into corporate arena they put me in functional, said it is more paid and I am good at communicating. Within few months I started eprforming not upto mark I made. I realised that man I am not functional I am an ABAPer. And then my beautiful journey begin. I get paid fair and I get paid happier.

So Dear GOVIND DONT GO WITH WIND.

Ahhh.. boring speech

Hi Govind,

I agree will be bit tough position you had now .... But if you struggle now in begining then only you can make a better future.. Since you got an entry for sap as you wish... Try to put more effort in Abap since CRM Technical is very good in market unless you have gained the good knowledge...

Thanks

Nayeem.

Hi Govind,

I would like to echo Yishal. In the long run, you need to go with the component and specialization that excites you the most, but it sounds like right now, you don't know what that might be. I would recommend not to move away from ABAP until you are SURE that you will enjoy the new specialization. That means doing the research. Read some basic SAP books which talk about the different areas. Check the various blogs that talk about the day to day work of the various specializations (like this one FAQ for SAP NetWeaver Admin (SAP Basis) Careers).

More importantly, talk to the people you work with! Ask them what they like and don't like about their specialty. Talk to them about what kinds of thought processes are involved. Then start reading the SCN areas that are most closely related and read some more books on that topic. See if you can get your ABAP work to be aligned with that area. If you're interested in Basis work, volunteer to be the basis liaison for your team and handle any communication/questions that your team may have for the basis team, etc.

You may want to check out some of the blogs available at SAP Career Blog Links as there are several links that discuss career paths once you have your foot in the door.

Hope this helps!

Best regards,

There will be a strong market for both CRM and XI for years to come. The best question to ask is which will you enjoy more and you are the only one who can answer that question. It's kind of a vanilla vs. chocolate question. Both are good. You may prefer one and I may prefer the other and we're both right as to the best flavor (for us).

Hope this helps!

Best regards,
