Hi Suma,

What was your specialty in Engineering? If you come from Computer Science background, then probably, ABAP would be a better fit for you, to begin with. Once you gain some experience, you can slowly plan to switch to a functional domain like EPM, CRM, etc, where you can get more visibility.

There are other modules like BI or BO, where you can focus on. However, you need to undergo a training on these modules, before you can apply for jobs.

Hope this helps.

Hi Suma,

Please dont call me Sir. You can just call me Nilanjan (or Neil).

Since, you are from Electrical background, ABAP might not suit you much. You can think of BI or BO. Do some research on that, and see whether it interests you or not. But please keep in mind, you need to do a course on the selected module, before you can apply for jobs.

Please take a look at the below modules, before you decide anything:

BW / BI (Business Warehouse / Business Intelligence)

BO (Business Objects)

SCM (Supply Chain Management)

MDM

CRM, etc.

Except the first 2, the others will require some domain knowledge

Hope this helps.

Its ok nilanjan

yep sure i will do a course.. first i have to decide on which module then i will go

for a course...  How abt FICO and all.. Is this BI and BO have longterm carrier..?

Hi Suma,

BO has demand right now in the market. BI will also sustain.

FICO requires knowledge of financial accounting. If you would have had commerce background or an MBA in finance, I would have suggested FICO. However, with engineering background, it would be very difficult to get into this domain.

Hope this helps.

Hi Suma,

I am working on BPC (Business Planning and Consolidation). This will require a finance background.

You can definitely do both. However, I wont suggest that, as it would be quite hectic. Moreover, ABAP is a programming tool. If you are have programming skills, then you can go for it. Otherwise, it would be quite difficult. Having said that, if you still want to do both, then try do prioritize. Do one first, and then only focus on another. Try to be master of one, rather than jack of all trades.

Hope you got my point.

Hi Suma,

I would advise you not to rush into anything. You should take your time and decide. At the start of your career, you should plan carefully. And to start a career in SAP, I would suggest you to start with ABAP development rather than on functional side. It is not an easy job to get into and fit into a functional consultant role. You need a very good domain knowledge and experience for that. As a fresher, you cannot match with that requirement. Also doing a course or certification will not help you much.  That will not give you the actual knowledge or experience. So I would suggest you to start with development and later you can gain knowledge on the job and shift to functional side. Otherwise you should gain solid domain knowledge by working in the area of your interest. You may also have a look at this blog .

Thanks for your understanding. Keep posting your queries.

Best Regards,

Leon

Hi Suma,

I would strongly advise you to get a good basic overall understanding of SAP before selecting a field of study. In college terms, wanting to learn SAP is like saying you want to learn Engineering. Electrical Engineering is very different from Structural Engineering which is very different from Computer Engineering.

There are several good, basic SAP overview books which you can purchase on Amazon. Try http://www.sap-erp.com/general/sap-module-overview.html for a very high level view. I have written a blog which explains the fundamental aspects of on technical aspect, Netweaver System Administration -- also known as SAP Basis. I've been postponing doing this for a while, but I think I'll write up a small overview myself.

Here's a skeleton:

  • Functional Consultant - requires strong domain knowledge PLUS SAP knowledge
    • Sales and Distribution
    • Financial/Controlling
    • Materials Management
    • Production Planning
    • etc
  • Technical Consultant
    • Basis
    • Programming (ABAP and/or JAVA)
  • Data Warehousing
    • Data Modelers
    • Programmers (subspecialty of Technical Consultant- Programming)
    • System Admin (subspecialty of Technical Consultant - Basis)

The Technical areas are typically easier to break into with only academic credentials. Functional Consulting is typically achieved only after several years in the domain PRIOR to learning SAP.

I recommend AGAINST choosing your career based solely on market predictions of what will be "hot" as these can change radically. Also, I *do* recommend picking your career based on something that excites you intellectually and emotionally. I have seen many folks chasing a dollar burn out quickly due to lack of passion. Also passionate SAP consultants stay hired and busy. Consultants chasing the dollar spend a lot of time on the bench whining about how terrible the market is and how much they hate what they do for a living.

Hope this helps!

Best regards,
