Hi,

I'm new to SCN.

I'm 23 year old B.E.(Bachelor of Engineering) graduate and have joined an IT company 16 months back.

I've been working in a SAP service domain project for the last 14 months under Release Management, under which we use Solution Manager tool for transports and change movement activities.

Now I want to get shifted to a different role in SAP.

I've completed SAP BASIS entry level training while joining the company and I believed that BASIS is an excellent area in which I can excel in my career.

But my leadership has different views. They have suggested me to join Functional Module instead of technical as technical guys work at the back end and functional guys work at the front end.

Now I'm confused.

Hence I request you to please guide me on the following points :

1. which one is better as far as the exposure and opportunities in career are considered : technical or functional?

2. under functional, which module has better opportunities? my leadership has suggested me to join FI, HR or Supply module.

3. to become a techno-functional expert, where should I start from now?

I've no one around me who can guide on careers in SAP.

Please help

-Ujjwal

dear,

sap basis area is not the best....

i suggest you would focus on FICO or logistics modules (as functional)

OR

became an ABAPer (as technical)

please search/explore this forum to find out useful links and suggestions

good luck!

Hi Ujjwal,

Its good that you've got some knowledge on BASIS however if you are interested in functional side then this knowledge would be an added advantage. But if you feel good about Basis and think to accelerate in the same then stick to it.  And yes, as said by mahesh kumar and Jaff  'HANA is really a hot cake these days.

Now coming to your points :

Hence I request you to please guide me on the following points :

1. which one is better as far as the exposure and opportunities in career are considered : technical or functional?

=> My opinion is to pursue a career in Functional if you got interest in business function areas since opportunities are more when compared to BASIS, and as I already said that Basis knowledge will be an add-on for you.

2. under functional, which module has better opportunities? my leadership has suggested me to join FI, HR or Supply module.

=> FI or FICO would be a better choice rest others are good too.

3. to become a techno-functional expert, where should I start from now?

=> Along with the knowledge of your desired functional area you need to know some ABAP coding as well if you wish to become a techno-functional.

Better you explore about the functional modules where you are working currently and assess your interest first and then decide whichever suites you better, you'll have good future in anyone provided the fact the skill you develop and use for the same.

All the best !!
