Need suggestion in choosing SAP modules as career option

I have 3 years experience in Procurement using Ariba and other tools working for a reputed IT company. Holding a Post graduate diploma in Supply china management after Engineering. Looking to build career in SAP SCM or SD/CRM modules. Please suggest.

Hi Dikshit,

Looking at your background I would not suggest you to opt for SAP CRM as you knowledge would not be used in this module. These are some of the modules you can think of:

1. SAP SCM
2. SAP APO : for Supply chain planning and optimization.
3. SAP SD
4. SAP FSCM , if you have interest in finance also. this module covers financial part of supply chain management.

You can explore SAP website to know more about these modules and how these can fit in to your career profile.

Then you can take a good decision.

Among these modules SAP APO & FSCM are new modules/area and hold good promise for career. But more than that it depends on the opportunities you get after doing certifications. Even in SAP SD you can excel if you pick up fast and get a good implementation exposure.

Like other career options even SAP modules can not guarantee you of a fast career growth if you do not get the right experience and exposure.

Hello Dear,

I would like to take your suggestion before entering into new field. I've a sound knowledge in the field of Supply chain management and Logistics. In my four years of career i've worked with Food, Automobile, Manufacturing and retail industry. Now, planing to move my career in SAP line and want to become SAP- SCM consultant. I've worked on SAP as a end user for couple of month and having huge interest in becoming a consultant. Could, you please suggest me from which institute (Mumbai) i can do SAP certifications (Authorized center and in term of placement facilities)? Do i need to resign from my current job for SAP course? Is SAP-SCM a secure career option or not? Kindly, advice for the same as, it's very helpful for my career growth. I'm very new for this career but not sure whether taking right decision or not, thanks

i ve been working with SAP ABAP for the past 1.5yrs.However i feel i can contribute more in the BI module.Can you please comment on the same and list the steps to changing into BI if possibe.

Hi Jemil,

Good to know that you want to contribute in SAP BI/BW. You have worked in SAP ABAP for 1.5 years and I do not know how good you are in ABAP. But if you are really good in ABAP then it does not make any sense in switching to BI because there is minimal scope of ABAP in BI. SAP BI is mainly about database queries and creation of infocubes and infosets which rarely uses  core ABAP.

So If you want to move to SAP BI because you do not find ABAP interesting then you can take a call. BI has good future.

Hi Sunil,

Firstly thank you for your advice.

I would say i m ok with ABAP.However, programming is not my area of interest which is the reason i m planning to shift to BI.Furthermore, i have plans for MBA, so i am under the impression that an experience in BI would count in future.Also i came to know that BI has a good scope abroad.

Hi Jemil,

I think ABAP is also great abroad and even in ur present role your experience would count for MBA Program.

However if you are not okay with programming then you can switch to BI/BW. Even in BI/BW there are many SAP products , catering to different requirements. So do a proper study before you take any decision.

Hi Sunil

The more i research on which module to pursue the more confused i get. What i hear from people is that coding is not something you ll continue doing after probably 5 yrs. So its better to take a certification as a functional by choosing a module of interest. I personally feel i can contribute more as a functional and considering my role in the organisation i currently work, i can even get relevant experience as a functional.

So my question is, firstly, is there any truth in the fact about no coding after 5 yrs.

secondly, consider i want to get certified as a functional, which module do i choose and how??

I would recommend you to opt for MM module since you already have domain knowledge in that.

Hi Dikshit,

Currently with your procurement experience you can go for MM and WM modules.

For future prospect you can look forward to gain a knowledge in SAP APO SNP module, which will be the extension of MM module.

For WM you can gain a knowledge in EWM module, which is the advanced version of WM.

Your profile is best suited for MM module. You can club MM with SCM or SRM area as you move forward in your career.

SAP SRM would be one area where you can leverage your domain (procurement) experience. There are interesting stuff in that space including Contract LifeCycle Management (CLM) and Ariba integration.

Hi Dikshit,

Go for SAP CRM. Has lot of demand in the market. SAP SRM is also ok but opportunities would be less as compared to CRM.

Have a look at SAP CRM Sales/marketing/service.
