Hello Experts,

This is my first post and glad to announce that I have made up my mind to make a career in the field of SAP. Need your guidance in deciding the right module for me.

I have studied and have 4 yrs of experience in the field of HR in manufacturing Industry in India, Now here in USA haven't practiced anything since 2 yrs, Now again have decided to get a hold on career and make future in the field of SAP. I've done bit of research and got much confused regarding the SAP HR and SAP HCM module as I see the market in this module is much more saturated as compared to others. I am interested and open to explore other modules like PP/MM and master data as well.

It would be great if you can provide me some guidance in deciding the right module which has a good job opportunities as well as the growth. I would highly appreciate your help.

Thanks,

CM

Hi CM,

You have 4 yrsof experience in HR, if you want to take advantage of that, then look at the SAP HR module. Your experience will help you to do well in it and will be counted when you search for a job after the learnings.

About other modules like PP/MM, anyone can study and venture into them, but what matters most is one's interest and skills. It should match the persons skill and interest. So decide after a comparison of the functions of the module and your skill sets.

Job opportunities and future growth are second thing, reason being, for example SAP SD has most no. of job oppenings in India, but then you have maximum no. of resources available too.

HCM is an advanced module of HR, so entering direclty into it may be difficult. But will be easy once you have some experience in HR module.

Hi CM,

Good to know that you have around 4 years of domain experience in HR. So in this case you are anyway best fit for SAP HR module instaed of any other module as your experience will support this. Moreover you have to understand something specific here.

SAP is only a ERP package to achieve the business processes for respective areas that any organisation or business is interested to implement.

So business process knowledge is the main driver, knonwing sap configuration in detail in parlance to achieve the business processes in the right way is the key.

There are many sap functional consultant in the market who are just venturing out and many of them are actually not aware about the business processes and sap solutions, its not very easy to find a person who has right blend of business process and respective sap module skills.

Now to answer your question regarinng what you should start SAP HR or HCM:

SAP-HR is with the basic modules of PA,OM,Time Payroll however SAP-HCM i.e Human Capital Management comes with New Modules like E-recruitment,E-learning, Talent acqusition, Performance workflow. And if you are learning now probably its better to learn SAP HCM in that way you learn some more stuff instead of just basic.

So to conclude i would say choose SAP-HR as your start and then jump to SAP HCM.

Get back to me in case you still need any clarification.

Thank you very much.

Thanks & Regards

And yes, I am thinking for self study, Do you think its good enough or do I need to take classes or training from a professional trainer?

Hi Cm,

If you want to do self study , then there are lot of contents available on internet. The HR space in this site itself will give you lot of documents.

Also use the site  Training and Certification Shop

Taking classed from an institute/trainer will be a better option, as you will be able to learn the topics which are important, at quick pace.

You will require to have SAP Ides system for your pracitce.

Are you in India, or anyother country? Most of the indian metros has lot of training centres and its fees are very less.
