Hi,

I am a B.E(computer science) gradute with an overall 6 years of experience in IT product support.

I have theoratical knowledge of java but never had hands on experience in coding. Due to personal reason I have taken a career break.I have been thinking of changing my domain and learning additional as I am very much bored of my support role as there is no much growth(technology wise). So before I start searching for job again I want to update myself with SAP technology. I want learn SAP but confused about which module to select.

Kindly suggest with best suitable option.

Thanks in advance

Setu

Hi Setu,

It would be good if you do some investigation and gather some idea of different SAP modules.

As no one can ideally suggest a best module to you unless we don't get any idea of your area

of interest, if any. Again since you are planning to switch your career only because of boredom of

product support, it should not happen when you switch your career as well. So do an initial research

and then if you ask your questions here, we will be able to guide you. Otherwise whatever that we

suggest may not be suitable for you.

Leon

Hi Leon,

Thanks for your response. I did browse regarding which module to select. As my past experience doesn't incline towards any of the SAP modules, I am not sure which one is best fit. considering my educational background I found out couple of options such as Basis n ABAP. I have no experience in system admin, so no BASIS.

I do have coding knowledge but no hands on experience. Though I can put effort in learning ABAP but concerned about job market for ABAP fresher. So now I request you to evaluate my above analysis and let me know if I am on right track.

The reason why I am requesting you to suggest is that you might be having an brief idea about each module or SAP market.

I do agree that each persons interest varies.

Thanks

Hi Setu,

Since you have no domain experience, it would be difficult to get into the functional side of SAP.

So i would suggest you to get in to technical side or system admin side.

What was your job profile during IT product support?

Hello Leon,

I was involved in handling support tickets, for Order management product, from the end users and providing solution to the issues. If the problem tickets down to an issue with the custom code, converting them into Change Requests after analysis. As you mentioned it would be tough to get into functional part due to lack of domain experience so I am planning to learn ABAP. I would like to work as techno functional resource in future. So need to have basic SAP setup on my laptop to practice ABAP programs. Could you please assist with the software required and steps to install?

Thanks

Order Management is in the SAP Sales and Distribution module, so if you have good understanding of the processes you are supporting, you could look into SD. Also, since you've been working in support, you could look into Customer Relationship Management Service Desk Module. That's the module that you would be working in if your customer was running SAP. The other alternative is Solution Manager Service Desk which is also used for help desk support, but is more IT help desk oriented.

If you don't have programming or system administration background, it's probably not a great idea to go down that road. Do you have a business background educationally? Since you need both an overview of the business process as well as how to use the software, you'd be better off taking classes.

If you don't have an MBA, there are good MBA/SAP combined programs which would be a good way to go. You might want to invest in a book or two in the above areas to see which attracts you most before you invest in classes. You also might want to look for a job at a company that actually uses SAP to do what you're doing now. It would be a lateral move, but would give you direct experience with SAP.

I hope this helps!

Best regards,

Hi Setu,

Basis, ABAP, XI, Portal shall be you main options. If systems admin, then choose basis, if you are good at SQL programming, choose ABAP. For java programmers, XI and Portal.

There are more options but will be too much to ask for.

SAP R3 handbook is a good book you can use. Will cost you Rs 500.

Start reading a bit of Netweaver 7.0. See link.
