Hi Everyone,
I need all of your valuable suggestions on shifting to SAP Basis from system administration career path. Briefly about myself, I have two years experience in IT system administration in a major consulting firm. My job basically involves day to day activities of troubleshooting and installations of business applications, fixing some of the OS and network related issues, make sure the information and machines secure and resolving the hardware issues of user's machines in the firm. Now I'm planning to learn SAP Basis and switch my career towards it. I kindly request you to provide your valuable suggestions and guidance on this and how do I prepare myself on getting a job in Basis field. I heard from few people even SAP security is good choice for sys admins. Any suggestions and guidance on this also?.
Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

You can go to different areas:
SAP Basis
SAP Security (with GRC)
I believe you have right amount of understanding in shifting yourself to the above mentioned areas. How to get job in Basis area is a big question? This all depends on the individual, as the employer will look into not only your basis skills however number of other skills like communication, cultural integration, adaptability, flexibility and loyalty etc. You will come to understand how the interviews are being conducted once you started attending the interviews.
All the best.
Best Regards,

Why do you want to shift?
A good option is to find a SAP basis job, thats how i started. I was a unix admin with no SAP and only small database knowledge when i started in a new company as SAP basis admin.
If you were a good sysadmin, you probably will be a good basis admin. But be aware compared to a simple unix admin or dba the SAP basis covers a much wider area. So you have to be open for new stuff and able to handle problems that cannot be solved with googling around.
