Moving from SAP testing to SAP SD Techno functional consulting.

Hi All,

I have around 4.5 years of experience in SAP testing, predominantly SD module, I even have some coding expereince in Selenium (Java). I am learning SAP SD in detail and planning to learn ABAP as well and move in to techno functional consulting area. Please advise me on the same. Thanks in advance.

Really nice to hear that you have good exp. in SD testing, Hope you have good knowledge in SD business process also, and now you are exploring the functionality of SD.This gives you more flexibility in SAP Sd module.

Also learning ABAP is an additional benifit being a java developer you can make it in short time.Also you can try exploring on mobility applications as now a days many functions are moving to mobile.

Try to look at (SD) integrations part with other modules as well,Once you are expertize in one SAP module you can easily look at other related modules and its process which will be helpful to you during your module integrations.

An additional suggestion. Always take in mind to solve business requirement with customizing tools and always development tools as the last resort. My rule is always the same, first try to solve it with master data, after with customizing and last option with development.

Inside development (RICEF) the main are is the E, ie: enhancements. Not only userexits and BADI's. VOFM is a key tool for instance in pricing procedures, credit risk management, output messages, and so on. And always, with the notes behind your decission making. There are a lot of notes suggestion how to use them and when is profitable to use them.

I might be wrong but as far as consulting goes, I believe the customers are not looking for "jack of all trades" (which would be the illusive "techno-functional" specialist) but rather for a "master of something".

E.g. if we need consulting in SD we would prefer to have someone who knows SD in depth, as well as how it connects to other modules. ABAP knowledge would not be desirable at all for such consultant. In fact, as an ABAPer, I frequently find it to be rather a disadvantage. I've had to fix quite a bit of very bad code copy-pasted from somewhere by the ABAP-happy functional folks. It is very rare when someone is good at both.

The "techno-functional" folks are mostly "permies" working for the SAP customers. If you are planning for a career in consulting it might not be a good choice. Of course, there are some exceptions, as I've mentioned, but few and far in between.

Thanks for giving me the powerful insight of the techno functional consulting domain. Your advice seems to be very practical, let me first concentrate on deepening my knowledge on SD and other related modules and if i still have the urge and time to go for ABAP, will go for it.

I agree with Jelena and you, choose the module you would love to work in and be really good. And then spend 5 to 7 years in it. SAP SD is huge...very huge, years will pass by trying to get good at it.
