Mechanical Engineer + Field Service background - how do I get into SAP?

Hello all,

I am a BE Mech, working with a MNC in Pune since the last 3 years, in the field inspections department. Prior to that, I was a GET in the mechanical maintenance department of a steel plant in Orissa.

Now, I have come to a stage where I feel my profile has become very restrictive and too specialized, with very little scope for work in other companies. Hence, I desire to get into SAP, and have a wish to become a consultant in the future. Like many others here, I wish to know where to start, considering my background.

I have thought about this a bit, and following are some of my thoughts:

  • For jobs involving SAP ERP implementation, it helps to have some experience as ERP user, or in the departments that use the system (Purchase/Store/Projects etc). As it happens, I am not part of any such department.
  • Since I have some customer interaction experience, SAP CRM could be a good choice for me.

Now, I need some guidance about this.

  • How can I leverage my work experience for my SAP career?
  • Is SAP CRM a good option?
  • What other options should I consider?

I would appreciate help greatly.

Dear Harshad,

Starting with your last question,

Looking at your profile, I feel PM (Plant Maintenance) module can prove to be a good choice than that of CRM.

Coming back to your first question,

It is very very difficult to get SAP ERP Implementation job on the basis of ERP user profile. These days even SAP certified consultants are struggling hard in order to get such JOBs.

No doubt SAP can give you a very good career and bright future but it is all-most Impossible to get a break for it.

Keeping the above points in view you may explore the available opportunities.
