Hi , I am   working as linux system administrator from past 1 yr. I want to switch my career to programmer. My passion is programming. I am familiar with language like  java , sql . c++ , c. Due to poor financial condition I had to accept the job given by my college tpo . I am java certified. In the current organization , I am developing some application using language java script, PHP , HTML  and SQL . But my designation is System administrator.

I am 2011 passout. Please suggest is it the proper  to switch  my career as a  ABAP programmer. Many insisted me to go for SAP BASIS. But again it will be some what same field  in which i am currently working.

Hi Sanket,

if you have passion for coding, you can switch towards sap abap. But prior to switching you have to understand some points which are necessary because you don't know anything about sap and its related technologies.

There are basically two branches of techniques in sap, one is called as technical and the other is called as functional, in technical side you will have ABAP, BASIS, UI5 , Workflow, Webdynpro etc etc, in which coding is mandatory (except BASIS which is administration tool).

On the other hand there are many many functional modules like SD, MM , FI/CO, CRM etc etc which requires good domain knowledge in that field , like a person who has done MBA, PGDM etc.

Now, comes to your queries as you wants to make a career in coding side you can opt for abap, but only problem what you will get is , it is difficult to get a job as an fresher in sap, so if you have any exposure where you can get job in sap abap easily then there is no issue, but if not then you may survive a difficult situation in getting a job in sap abap.

If you have further queries, please revert.

Thanks for your suggestion.

As per your recommendation  I will go for SAP BASIS. As I ave 1 yr experience as linux System administrator. The only problem is SAP Basis training is not available online and is too costly as comparable to other module. I cant leave my current job. Is their any other means through which i can go for SAP BASIS training.

Hi Sanket,

if you likes coding then you can take SAP ABAP as an career option, it is a purely technical coding part of SAP, in sap abap you will get online training too, but if you wants to go with BASIS you can learn through internet, but matter is that how will you perform practical work .

So, you can take abap as an career option, later you can move towards other similar technilogies too.

Can you please tell me which city presently you are living ?

I installed sap netviewer at my office place . the only problem is software is trail pack and when i am creating  a program ,the software asking for access key. cannot create a program.

Hi Sanket,

you should ask to your trainer at ATOS about taking GUI, and if possible search some person who shares access to their portals with a minimal fees, on monthky basis you can take access as many times you wants, they will provide you the user id and password to access their database.
