Eligibility for working in ABAP ?

Hi all,

Can anyone please tell me what is the eligibility for doing ABAP course? I am seeing that all are from MCA/Comp. Sc or Electronics Engineering background doing ABAP. I am from a general background i.e. I have BSc in Pure Science ,that too I passed long ago. So I am not a fresher or young. I have crossed 35 years of age & I am from India where competition is very high. But I do have a MBA in Marketing but I don't have good appearance & obese & I dont have very fluent English-speaking skills. So I am not confident that I can make a career in SAP SD since I have to talk to customers . That's why I was thinking of ABAP  in which I feel communication skills wont much matter.

So can I go for ABAP in-spite of not having a programming or computer science /technical background?

With Regards

Moved to Career Center. The ABAP space is for questions and discussions related to technical aspects of programming.

As far as qualification for the course, that varies from country to country. In Western Europe, you simply register and pay, and do the courses. That won't guarantee you a job though. So on to what is probably the motivation for your question: what qualifications for a career in ABAP?

I know people who work in IT as programmers with all kinds of degrees and do very well. I remember one chap with a botany degree. Funnily enough his surname was Tulip.. So the degree subject is not, per se, a limiting factor. However, computer science graduates are always going to be more attractive to recruiters. You could therefore improve your chances by gaining some kind of computer science qualification - perhaps a masters.

A good ABAPper should have good communication skills. Yes, there are many programmers with poor communications skills, but the best are excellent communicators (exception: deeply technical developers - in ABAP you're unlikely to require that kind of depth).

Finally, can you program (in any language)? Do you like programming? If you don't enjoy programming, then a career in ABAP is not for you.

Dear Pradip,

First you need to find out whether you are made for ABAP or Programming?

If you can do programming well then I do not think degree matters much.

If you feel programming is very easy for you and if you are confident then go for it.

But you need to plan well as you are 35 plus and you would have your own goals and you need to decide, is it worth risk taking.

All the Best...

Hi Pradip,

There is nothing that determines an eligibility to be an ABAPer. Its all you should have is a bit of analytical skills and good programming knowledge.

And I personally would suggest you to go with SAP SD functional course as you hold a MBA in marketing. Its not that you should be proficient in English. And again I find your written communication is good and this would do a lot in terms communication. But sustaining into technical background with this age and without any technical background will definitely be hectic. Think wise. Congrats anyway!.
