Careers in SAP Support

Hello All,

Over the past two years I have been on an implementation team working as a PP/MM/QM key user. Our go live event was successful and I have stayed on the project to support end users and future improvement initiatives. Prior to this I was the Process Engineering Manager.

My company has been struggling to find a new job description for me. Of course this has me worried about growth opportunities. I have been doing a lot of research on the question section here as well as other sites to find a job description and title that fit. Based on the research I have done and the questions I have asked our consultants, I would be considered a Super User or some sort of business consultant. I have a lot of knowledge of the use of other modules, beyond the ones I helped implement, and have been working to further integrate and change business processes to better use the system. My knowledge of the business is strong and goes from end to end.

Do those two job descriptions fit the information I have presented? Please let me know if more information is needed about what I have done or my roles. I am going to compile the different job descriptions and submit them to my human resources group with recommendations about what role I should take on.

Thank you,

Robert Tanous

It is strange that you have to invent your position/job description for your HR…

sap support analyst or sap consultant or

whatever ‘sap’ or ‘non-sap’ description –

does it really matter if you still work there?

they (HR) should give you the appropriate job description.

may be you are more worried about your cv details preferring more ‘sap’ words in there?

First of all, one should not compare the designations of a product based industry with IT industry as they are entirely different

Moreover, I am really surprised to note your comments that you were struggling to find a new job description. It is your HR's responsibility to define a suitable job description and align to each employee.

If at all you are really concerned on your designation, may be "Production Manager-IT Support Head" might suit your profile, if you prefer to continue with your existing organization. But if you are looking for a change in IT industry to start as a SAP consultant, then, I am not sure, how far, you have gained knowledge in standard SAP process in modules like MM, PP or QM; without which, it would be very difficult to enter into IT industry. Most importantly, you need to sacrifice on your package as you will be treated as a fresher in IT industry. Keeping all these in mind, take a call.

Not really a strange request for me, have seen this more than once that one has to write his own job description, sometimes even the work certificate when you leave the company. HR is so far away from what you do that they do not have the knowledge to do it. Eventually your supervisor could do it, but finally it is you who really knows what you do.

Since those terms are not hard defined and may even be subject for a change while you continue to do the same I would say the 2 are just fine.

And HR certainly struggles if you are a kind of a generalist which does not fit into single boxes. I faced this often, was allocated to the SD team, but did in reality special tasks like data migration and archiving, implemented purchasing and inventory management in remote locations. With each reorg of our IT the same question came up "where do we put him?" . Of course this happens more to the residents than to the new hires which are directly hired for a certain job, where the job description is clear right from the beginning.

ppioentry.ppioentry Unfortunately it even matters if you still work for the same company, even it is just used to fill the the new software which was implemented in HR. Sometimes you even have to write a new application if the whole department is restructured and there might be less positions or different positions than it was before.

I do really like this current organization but i am always keeping one foot out the door. I would eventually like to consult as this implementation has given me a taste for business development in terms of the system, something that speaks to me.

For the question regarding how much I have learned thus far. Everyday in this project has been a learning experience. I am very aware of how integrated every module is with one another. I am learning how best to work through those touch points and to structure the business data and processes to support them. I would say that I still have a lot to learn.
