Career shift advice

Hi Everyone,

Hope everyone here is doing well in the current health crisis.

I'm looking for career change advice and have also gone through quite a few similar posts on this forum but am still not convinced. I have overall 10 years of experience by now and have been through multiple phases of a project's life cycle. My career path so far has been from dev & support, QA, to complete project handling which included kick-offs, requirement & impact analysis, coding (.Net - C# & VB with MSSQL), and finally release management with on-demand post-release support. Since my profile was completely technical and I was looking to make a move to more management-related roles, I got enrolled in a Global MBA course that ranks in the Top 25 courses in Europe and finished it last year but given the lack of career opportunities at the time(2020), I had to choose to get back in a technical role again for the moment.

Now, I'm looking to get into SAP for the rest of my career as in my understanding it's much more stable and widely used than MS technologies. However, my concern is that will I again be considered a fresher in this field given that my professional exposure to SAP is next to nothing? I have looked into the SAP Activate PM course and the SAP S/4 HANA certifications but am unsure of which path would be beneficial. If I complete this, would I be at least eligible to apply for any middle management roles at all, or is that wishful thinking?

Hi shalabh18

The career growth depends on what one is passionate about. That said, if you switch technology, you should be ready to spend some time in adapting new technology, which means you might have to continue as a fresher.

However, why not look at other options like scrum master or product owner certifications, which can enable you to get into project management/program management. Lot of customers, who are working with SAP Technologies have adapted AGILE as a tool and these should enable you to get into those areas.

Hi Sanil,

Appreciate the prompt response and the advice. I considered all these options before embarking on the MBA journey and as you mentioned, it's the passion that matters. Once I handled complete implementations on my own, it was more interesting to me than the technical aspects.

Devising solutions and strategies and being a problem solver means more to me than running after developers, managers, and timelines. Also, as per what I have read and seen, these roles are mostly considered as overhead by most organizations. I don't mean to be disrespectful, so please correct me if I'm wrong about this.

I'll still consider your inputs and shall decide once I have received more responses.

Thanks & Regards.
