Some of my seniors who are SAP consultants for almost a decade now said that you can't earn much in SAP field as compared to other technologies such as Web Development or Data Science,is this true ? Please throw some light on this.

It greatly depends on how different fields & roles are compared.

Organizations have pay scales, so regardless of what background one has, SAP Consultant or Data Scientist, a person on a certain grade will get salary within its range. Typically all of such roles will be part of IT Division in a company.

In case of project-based hiring, it's dependent on the business needs, and the rate is negotiated based on demand/supply of a skill, SAP or any other.

One can reach heights of any career, and can earn more than other.

Salaries (for internal consultants) and rates (for freelancers) depend on a lot of factors, you cannot easily compare these to web development and data science, it is like apples and oranges.

For example, payment depends on what kind of skills you have and what is the demand and supply of these skills where you compete with others. For example, SD and MM are more common compared to specific addon knowledge, which means that if you are looking for somebody with skills that are scarce in the market you will probably have to pay more to attract the right talent.

It also depends on the location and the company where you work - it is no secret that there are countries where the salaries are lower than others, and even in the same country there are companies that offer better rates than others for the same skill-set. There are also differences in the paychecks within the same company, but then it depends on the abilities to sell yourself well.

And, of course, it depends on how good you are at what you are expected to do, it is not just the time you have worked in a certain field.

No one is stopping you from learning Data Science and combining this knowledge with SAP functional or technical skills, or learning to develop FIORI apps if you are a functional consultant. 🙂

Very often, people who complain that they are not paid enough do little to change the situation by looking elsewhere or acquiring new skills.

By the way, where I live, there are a lot more job postings for SAP Consultant compared to Data Scientist #justsaying.

I don't like questions like this because there are so many factors to put into consideration but working in technology period; the information you know today might be obsolete tomorrow. It depends on your knowledge, your specialty, and your willingness to learn and adapt. I work primarily in FICO, but how many FICO consultants are there? Way too many to count, so to a perspective employer why hire me vs the next Consultant? I must be willing to learn something else. I know a bit of MDG, TRM, and as well as SQL and other programming languages. You have to stand out so yes if you're multifaceted type of Consultant, you can see great returns but you must be willing to learn and adapt.
