Hello All,
Kindly correct me if my post is in wrong forum.
I need career advice. I have been working as 10 years of work experience in the IT Services industry.
I have been working last 6 years as SAP Test Engineer. I have skill set in the areas of SAP SD, MM, APO (SNP and gATP).
SAP SD - 6 years
SAP MM - 3 years
SAP APO (SNP & gATP) - 1 year
I am completely confused to which career path to take. Even though I am interested in Functional consulting I see it very difficult to get into functional roles considering my experience. Should I learn a completely new module like an industry specific or should I keep looking for opportunities in core modules?
What should I do to get into functional consulting? What additional knowledge is required to become a successful functional consultant other than core functional knowledge like IDOCs, Integration of SAP with messaging services like Biztalk, Configuring RFCs, knowledge of ABAP, Identifying when to use which option like BAPI, IDOC or understanding OSS notes.
Thanks in advance for the help
Regards,
Srinivas

Hi Srinivas,
Please check whether any Managerial role vacancy is there in your organization. Already you have 10 years of experience in Functional side in SAP SD, MM & APO. I suggest you to check the functional or managerial requirements in your organization and which has high demand. If demand is more in any latest technology it is always added advantage to you and your organization, Also try to check in other projects in your organization. If you aren't able to find out and if your are interested only in management line. Involve in management activity like interacting with clients, maintain quality, managing team, preparing some project related documentation activities & other resource activities. Also try to complete PMP certifications if you are switching over to management side. All the best!

Srinivas,
You have worked the longest in SD, so try in the field of SD.
Learn the processes, functionalities and related configurations.
Learning a new module is not an easy way!

Hi TW, Suseelan,
Thanks for your advices. Sorry for the delay in reply. I was busy with my family matters.
I have been working on SAP as QA for a long time, finding difficulty to get a job in functional role. I did apply various for various jobs, but cannot get an interview call. I am still working daily on SAP but from Test capacity.
I am trained in SAP SD functional but not certified. I took SD training to learn functionality.
On paper I know SAP SD. But to do configs and get implementation experience I need to work on implementation projects or atleast some enhancement roll out projects.
Also I am learning APICS CSCP which gives end to end supply chain exposure as I have working experience with SAP APO, SD and MM.
Currently wokring on a project to test EDI messages and updates to EDI messages. So any advice on how to land on to a functional consulting jobs?
Regards,
Srinivas
