Can a BSc(Pure Science) do SAP ABAP course?

Hi all,

I know people will generally advice me for SAP SD as that suits my Qualification & Experience more than SAP ABAP but since I am more interested in programming ,I want to do ABAP. So I have  already enrolled in a SAP partner firm(not an Authorised Education center though) in SAP ABAP course . The classes have not yet started but they have enrolled me for SAP ABAP after I requested them. Initially though they also suggested me SAP SD butnow the counselor guy is telling me that SAP ABAP is ok for me & I can do it.

As for my qualification & experience ,I have BSc(PCM) & MBA(Mktg) & also 4 years of Pharma Sales experience as a Medical Representative. But I never enjoyed the sales line ,as well I learnt very little about the total Sales or Business Process that is required as a knowledge in this SAP SD line.

So please advice me whether/if  I can do SAP ABAP with such a background (& I presently don't have 3 lacs Rupees to spend in an ATC).

What are the risks & consequences? Can I manage to get at least a small job in ABAP in a small company?

I do have programming knowledge & learnt several programming languages till date. I know C,PHP,HTML,Javascript(basic) ,CSS ,some basics of C++,enrolled in Oracle course in SQL star but left as I found it not understandable or boring.

I once joined a PHP programmer in a very  small firm but later left as I again found the job boring & very low-paid.

But this time I am confident & I am sure that I can crack the ABAP programming this time & get a job.

But will not having a B.tech or MCA degree matter in the long run?

Please advice.....

Hope you all understand my situation.

Thanks & Regards

Hi Pradip, ABAP is business application language which is easy to learn when compare other languages like JAVA. ABAP coding language is easy to understand, you can go for it, if you are really interested about programming. As you did MBA, after your degree. now you are going back to programming. Be prepare to provide reason for switching to programing after MBA. With out certification also, there opening for ABAP freshers. search the job portals. All the best. Thanks, SS

Hi, degree will not matter. If you love programming, as you say, and hence want to take up ABAP, this is the best option. Most important thing even in SAP world is that you should enjoy what you are doing. If coding is your forte, go for it; don't listen to others because options are so many but in the end you have to choose one which you love most.

Rahul

But friends plz tell me ,is  SAP SD  easier than SAP ABAP seeing my profile that I am not strong in programming?

Also,I think SAP SD is more suited to my profile than ABAP?

Hi Pradip,

I agree with Rahul, what ever you want, go for it.

Now I am confused after reading your post .what do you want ?  what you really want.

You said that you are not interested in programming and left other programming languages and you are determined to go for ABAP.

Now you are asking about SAP SD.

SAP is all about business programming, Functional modules including SD , you need domain experience to understand the business process. with out that , we will struggle to understand the client requirement and mapping in to SAP.

As you said , you do not have sales experience. do not go for what is easy for you.

Decision is YOURS. Think about it.

Never let go off your dreams....!!!

Thanks,

SS

Hi Suresh,

I do have sales experience. I said that I worked for 4 years in pharma sales as a medial representative!

Please read my first post carefully... what i meant is that a medical representative doesn't have idea about the full business cycle as they are mostly or always working in the field .

Hi Pradip

If you're determined to learn ABAP as you believe this is the right thing for you and your passionate about doing it then this is the correct course of action for you.

SD is a functional role, ABAP is a technical role. Both will have their own equal challenges in learning...

Follow what you believe is right for you.

Good Luck

Arden

When you have MBA, why would you like to come to ABAP. There are lot of people out there in the market with the same skills and infact with a better skills than you.

I would suggest to go for SAP CRM Associate Certification and then SAP CRM Marketing Professional certification which suites you better.

CRM is the King.

Ohh no I was already confused between ABAP & SD , now you again added CRM!!

Let me clear one by one, firstly dont judge me as confident in programming as till now I have been a failure in programming.

2ndly, i am very confused between SD & ABAP. I dont yet know which one I should pursue.

Thirdly, I never said I dont have any sales experience as Suresh Sai Sir said. What I meant is that I maynot have the knowledge of the "total business cycle" as required in SAP SD, since I worked in the field. I never worked in the warehouse or Purchase deptt or in materials sections, billing section etc. So I dont know the steps of billing or that related to purchase.

Will that create a problem from me in learning or while doing actual job??

I was never involved from the Raw materials to the Final Warehouse stage, what happens intermediate. By sales I meant only SALES,plain & simple field sales. No purchase, inventory ,etc etc technical terms & jargons as involved with SD.

Hope you have seen Medical Sales Representatives working in field for small Pharma companies like say -Juventus, Shine,Himalaya etc etc. or big ones like Ranbaxy, Abbott , DRL,Sun Pharma , MSD, Torrent etc etc.

So with that background can I be successful in SAP SD or for me SAP ABAP & SAP SD will be same & I have to start from level zero in terms of domain experience(knowledge) in both fields?

It is this above what I wanted to ask. My main aim is to get a job be it in ABAP or SD or whatever.

I am not passionate about either ABAP or SD ,but yes SD is more aligned to my past background since after all whatever sales I worked in ,at the end of the day it is called SALES job only and not technical.

But you all misjudged me thinking I am very passionate about ABAP ,what is the use of being passionate if in class i cannot manage to excel or even understand ? If after learning I cannot execute?

Then SD will be same for me as ABAP,maybe I will even regret choosing ABAP.

Also, I heard that there are two versions of the SAP system:

1.  FULL ABAP Stack
2.  DUAL ABAP/JAVA Stack

What if I require to know JAVA as well in future? I am already in my mid-thirties .

I am not among those who wants a HUGE salary , I am satisfied even with low salary , but I want a JOB at the end of the day.

So plzzz advice me accordingly.

HI Pradip,

I don't mean to confuse you, I just want to clear you one thing, I have been in ABAP from past 9 years. I am ABAP, CRM and HANA Certified Consultant. I am working as a Technical Specialist now. I would like to give you some background information about my career.

1. I did ABAP Associate Certification NTW WAS 6.40 in 2008

2. I did ABAP Professional Certification in 2009

3. I did CRM Certifications Ehp1 in 2013 and Ehp2 in 2015

and so on for HANA in 2014

Now, why would I need to keep moving with my skills, because the market is demanding those skills.

if you still stick to old modules in SAP, there is a huge competition out there.

At the same time, I don't say ABAP/SD is waste, I am just suggesting to go for latest technologies or Modules like the way you choose while you are buying your smartphone or laptop. Everything got their own importance. It is just the DEMAND and SUPPLY that makes you difference.

Some people think "opportunity is work" which knocks your door only once and if you miss it then it is a waste.

Hope this helps you to boost your career.

Thank you Bhargav,

I'm sorry if I have hurt you with my reply . But dont misunderstand me as I was already confused between SD & ABAP.

Can you plz tell me who can choose CRM?

I dont think the center will allow me to change to CRM as they would most probably say I am not eligible for that course since its an advanced module one does after SD.

So please tell me , what is the eligibility for SAP CRM?

Hi Pradip,

Anybody can do CRM. I suggested CRM for you as special Module because, You did MBA - Marketing. CRM stands for Customer Raltionship Management.

There are sub divisions in the Module

SALES

SERVICES

MARKETING

Apart from this there is some good stuff that only SAP CRM can do it well. which is

PARTNER CHANNEL MANAGEMENT

INTERACTION CENTER.

It is not so difficult for an MBA Marketing alumina to understand SAP CRM. In other words SAP CRM best suits for those who want to deal Customers in terms of Field Application as mentioned above (SALES, SERVICES, MARKETING).

Do your research, Search the Market with ABAP/SD Jobs or CRM Jobs. I agree SD would benefit you if you have CRM Certification, but it is not necessary that you should have SD.

In terms of pay, CRM consultant earns like 50 to 120 dollars an hour where as ABAP guys earn 50 to 80 max until and unless if he don't have any specialized skills.

Hope this information helps you.
