Dear all,

Hello. Recently, I'm planning to develop my career path in business analytics area but don't know how can I start w/.

My major is MIS and currently working closely w/ SAP. However, I don't have any deep technical background and module background. Instead of that, I'm more familiar with solution manager and only some general usages/terminologies.

I have thought about SAP BW for a while but these days, SAP Business Object solutions more fittable for my desire like predictive analytics.

But still, it is just my gut feeling so I really wanna hear from various voices.

Best Regards,

Seong Do Lee

Hello Seong,

I think Ravi is spot on. Moving in the convential way would be the preferred option, however going the other way around should be a fine possibility as well. Due to the fact BusinessObjects is a SAP owned company they  have been pushing to get everyone upskilled since the acqusition in the relevant products, be that a BO consultant on BW or a BW consultant on BO. They need people with both, simple as that.

I think a really good BI route at a later stage would be BW -> BW/BO -> BW/BO and EPM. The EPM product is very new but is a solid product I hear and would be picking up over the years. As well, the entire BI Analytics suite is very linked with HANA which could give you even larger span in terms of ways to direct your career.

Hope it helps,

Hans

It would be useful if you have fair amount of BW knowledge before going to Business Objects. Though it is not mandatory, but highly recommended.

Thanks for your valuable answer. I have one more question on your advice. How do you think then start w/ BO and learning BW additionally. Or reversed way, start w/ BW and learning BO additionally. Any reason on that recommendation? As those two solutions are closely connected in business usage, I think whatever I choose I guess I also will experience another.

I would always go in the conventional ways. First BW then go for BO. I believe this would give you solid foundation.
