I think you have to be a member of the team to work on BW. I don´t know anybody who can do all by himself. From the data extraction through ABAP extractor to the final stage like displaying the result on the portal or something. Same with BO. You would be the guy who would provide the data for the rest of the team/ rest of the data processing process.
The answer is yes, ABAP is usefull for BI/ BO, but it is like 10% of the must-have knowledge to build a BI/BO solution (I think, I am not a BI pro). Otto

That's the point! Please post your questions in one forum only. If you make a mistake, ask a moderator to move it (you can mark your own post as abuse to do this). Anyway - I've deleted the duplicates, as this is the correct place.

Specify if you are interested in BI or BO. There is a difference.
BI is a netweaver thing. You use ABAP there to write the extractors, use the DDIC structures etc.
BO needs some integration. BO can use "two" types of data sources: BI/ BW sources (queries and stuff) and ERP sources (especially tables, BAPIs and stuff).

WD and ABAP are quite different things. After two years of ABAP, you should know that. ABAP is a language. What language would you use in WD, if ABAP would be gone? They´re so many things based on ABAP you cannot expect ABAP will like extinct in future 20 years or something.
To learn ABAP and especially ABAP OO (which is the one very useful with WD, since it is object based and stuff) can be a good shot. You can use this knowledge of classes and pointers to do some WF stuff.
Of course you can move to BI/BO but (probably not their fault) I didn´t have a comprehensible answer how to start with the development for BO with some knowledge of ABAP. In fact I would LOVE to read a blog or some SDN contribution stuff about how to approach my ABAP development from the BO side, how to create any BO stuff based on my ABAP coding. But have never found an article like "from ABAP to BO for dummies". I would write such an article just after I would understand how that works. But I don´t know how that works:(( If anybody who has experience both with BO and SAP (I have understood that it is not common experience in BO world) could help here, it would be appreciated a lot, Imho.
