The Chinese Culture Club at SAP Silicon Valley made its start 10 years ago by hosting celebrations for the Chinese New year and Mid-Autumn Festival. These occasions are very important in Chinese culture and are for reunion with family and friends. With celebrations at our offices, we wanted to provide a joyous and welcoming time for our Chinese colleagues who were away from home during these festivities.

As SAP has grown in Silicon Valley, these celebrations have also expanded to all campuses. With the support of colleagues, including Lily Wei, Tiffany Fung, Elaine Yang, and Kathleen Shih, these festivities are now hosted and enjoyed by employees at each SAP location. These events provide a great way for colleagues to socialize and make new connections with people outside their teams.

These occasions also help other cultures at SAP to get to know the traditions, history, and art of China. The Chinese employees share the traditions and legends around these festivals. We also introduce different art forms and history, and have previously martial art shows, introduce the Chinese bone scripts from which the modern Chinese languages emerged, held tea ceremonies, and provided introductions to Chinese architecture and other cultural icons.

As a cultural group, we also contribute to SAP’s business strategy. We help host Chinese business and government delegates when they visit our offices. We also organize opportunities for professional for both members and non-members. Recently, the club invited the founder of a wearable technology start-up to present the trends and technologies in wearables and discuss SAP’s role in this growing area.

I would like to thank SAP Silicon Valley and the SAP diversity team for their support in growing this club. I also want to thank my colleagues who have been volunteering to run our activities and make them a success with their enthusiasm and hard work. Thank you to Ningjing Gao, Jun Shi, Nancy Yan, Lily Wei, Tiffany Fung, Elaine Yang, Kathleen Shih, Zhong Zhang, Mark Deng, Eric Du, Sheng Li, Tom Chen, and many other colleagues.
