SAP Czech Republic Month of Service

SAP encourages employees to contribute their time and talents through hands-on help or business support to promote positive change in underserved areas of society. SAP’s annual signature volunteering initiative held every October, Month of Service, encourages all employees to get engaged.

SAP believes every one of us can be a hero and apply our unique talents and time to help improve the lives of others. SAP’s annual Month of Service allows employees to willingly take part in any of the volunteering activities offered by the Company and claim one paid working day off for those activities.

Month of Service was prepared this year in the Czech Republic by Eva Dudová and Hana Valešová for employees around the country in the SAP BSCE, SAP ČR, and Ariba offices. Employees were given the choice of 32 projects to choose from over the course of 12 working days in October. By the last day of October, the final results of employee participation in SAP’s Month of Service in the Czech Republic are as follows:

  • 288 employees in the Czech Republic actively joined Month of Service
  • In 32 projects
  • During 12 working days of October
  • Making 2301 volunteering hours in total

“Thanks to the increased number of projects, days available, and inclusion of Ariba employees, we have seen a 28% rise in employee participation and volunteer hours in the Czech Republic since last year (2014).” Eva Dudová said.

In fact, even when comparing to other countries in the Central/Eastern European region, the Czech Republic ranked second after Germany in nearly all categories including number of volunteers, total volunteer hours, and number of projects provided.

Besides organizations and charities SAP in the Czech Republic has long cooperated with, tips for new projects were also gathered by employee suggestion. One colleague, who is a regular volunteer in his free time, Jan Janda, recommended the organization Sant’Egidio, which helps improve the lives of the poor and homeless. SAP volunteers cooked warm meals for the homeless and, together with Sant-Egidio, distributed them at an “Autumnal Picnic” in Prague’s Letná Park.

SAP in the Czech Republic also worked with TyfloCentrum to help organize the Automotodrom 2015, an event at the Masaryk Circuit in Brno that gave blind people the chance to get behind the wheel and experience racecar and motorcycle driving! Over 50 blind and visually impaired individuals took part in the event from around the country. Photos from the event can be seen here.

Other activities that attracted a high number of volunteers focused on nature, animal welfare, hospital visits, and improving centers for children.

SAP volunteers raked, mowed the meadows, cut unwanted trees, and repaired stone animal habitats in protected landscape area of the Butovice Fort and Prokopské and Dalejské valleys. Volunteers fed, cleaned, and pet the cats at the cat shelter "Šanta kočičí" as well as assisted with annual maintenance at a guide dog training school for the blind.

At the volunteer center Lékořice in the Thomayer University Hospital, SAP employees prepared a charity bazaar and held a creative Halloween workshop for the kids at the Department of Pediatric Surgery.

SAP volunteers also assisted with annual maintenance like raking, painting, gardening, repairs, and other winter preparation at the university kindergarten Arabská, Children’s Home Charlotty Masarykové, and Integration Centre Garden.
