I love observing family dynamics. It doesn’t matter who you are or where you are from, there is always some kind of crazy in our families and a role we play to contribute to that craziness.
For me, as the oldest of 4 children, I play the role of Counselor. I am the first call each person in my family makes (and there are lots of calls as Michael Brenner can attest) when someone in our circle of 6 is considering a new career path, needing advice, annoying someone else, being annoyed by someone else, or just wants to chat about their day. I’ve been told I’m the voice of reason, the rock, the coach, the therapist, and many more. The bottom line is that I’m a listener at heart who remains calm through the storms that any lively family like ours encounters. Some would find this role irritating (can’t everyone just mind their own business?) but for me, it gives me energy, it gives me purpose, and I love the connectedness of my family.
It’s no surprise that this role follows me to the office. I find my purpose in mentoring, guiding, and supporting folks along their own journeys – whether it be through exploring new career paths, seeking and sharing networking advice, battling conflicts or a million other scenarios. Quite simply, I like helping people – it fuels me, makes me happy, and gets me excited to come to work each day.
At SAP, I am honored that I get to spend my time on the “people” part of our business. That is why I’m so excited about the Run With Purpose campaign and tapping into each individual’s purpose and reason for being here. I love being an enabler to share these stories with the world. It is all of the different voices, hearts, and souls coming together that make SAP such an amazing place to thrive.
And in a bizarre twist of fate (or maybe accidentally on purpose), I’ve managed to recreate my own childhood dynamics - chaos, loudness, fun, excitement - with my own fabulous 4 children. I just hope my oldest, Sophie, knows what’s she’s in for and loves her place in the world as much as I do.
