Connor Mahon, Communications Assistant, SAP UKI, brings us the next installment of “Life of an SAP Intern” with some Applications Advice from Hannah Brier, Recruitment Associate EMEA UK, SAP UKI. Read on for some good advice when applying for a job.
Connor: This next in the “Life of an SAP intern” blog series focuses on applications tips and tricks so that you stand the best chance of making it through the critical pre-screening and progress through the recruitment cycle; hopefully becoming a successful candidate.
Hannah Brier, a fellow intern working in recruitment, details below the dos and don’ts when applying for roles:
Do Use LinkedIn – in this social media driven age it is important to utilise our ever expanding networks. LinkedIn is essentially a professional Facebook and should be used to similar to a CV. Make sure you detail your experiences, skills and include a personal profile. Be sure to use a professional photo (i.e. no drunk selfies!) as it’s always good to put a face to the name.
Make your CV clear – There is nothing worse than having to search for information in a CV, everything should be set out and easy to read. Try limiting it to one page; being clear and concise in the information you want to get across. Using bullet points is always good as it’s simple yet effective. Include only relevant information and lay everything out chronologically, always start with the latest addition to your work experience or education.
Use industry buzzwords – But don’t overcomplicate it! It’s always good to use some jargon when applying to certain roles but just make sure you are not just using words for the sake of it. If you speak about SAP HANA you will need to know about it. We don’t expect you to be an expert but you will need to back up any points you make with relevant knowledge.
Stand out – Try and make your application as interesting as possible. This may be hard when applying for a corporate role but anything that makes you a bit more individual will always look good on your CV. Do tell us if you’ve done any travelling, tell us about your interests and hobbies (work related ones and personal ones) and include anything you feel is relevant. Adding pieces like this will ensure that your application has personality and isn’t bland.
Don’t lie on your CV – You will be caught out! It’s natural to embellish your CV to make it sound better but if you outright lie it will reflect really badly on you, and above all it will lead to your application being terminated. Being honest is exactly what SAP look for so ensure to apply this to everything you do.
Send your application without checking it – Make sure you double, treble and quadruple check your application before sending it. Even the simplest of mistakes can be enough to put off a recruiter or hiring manager. Be sure use proper grammar, punctuation and spelling throughout your CV and application. Failing to do this could hinder your chances at getting your desired role within SAP. Never send a CV with Americanisms in it (using Z’s instead of S’s) to a UK based company, it is considered incorrect spelling and therefore a mistake on your application.
Don't use complicated formats - As with the above point, please make your CV clear. If your application is complicated and not easy to read the chances are someone will give up reading it halfway through and you won’t be considered. The same goes for overcomplicated language; don’t try to be the modern day Shakespeare on your application as it is completely unnecessary. Be to the point, precise and straightforward.
