A person spends hours on an overloaded, content heavy PowerPoint, and then delivers it to his audience by reading the slides without emotion or impact. The audience is either lost, or bored. They are uninspired. The information goes in one ear, and out the other. The speaker is nervous, and never engages his audience.

Who am I to Judge?

My name is Patrick Muyal, and I work closely with both Retail SM and DEV on the CAR / POSDM Powered by HANA projects. My main focus is ‘go to market’, as well as CEI related activities. In addition to my current role, I am the DKOM speaker coach for Montreal and Palo Alto. 

In the past, I have delivered dozens of onsite demos and presentations to end users and C level executives around the globe in 3 languages.

I have also provided multiple Presentation Skills sessions in Montreal , Scottsdale, Palo Alto, and Newtown Square. The skills sessions have thus far received overwhelmingly positive feedback from all attendees, which has included PO’s, developers, sales, IMS, Partner Client Advisors, and consultants.

I like the fact that SAP collaborates with public speaking coaches for big events.

On local events however, this is often not the case. The difference in quality is painfully clear.

I often notice the same issues in our own organization as well. People tend to jam all their thoughts into slides. I shiver whenever a slide with a complete text passing by. Often times, managers actually request that we put a lot of text in their slides, so that they can easily share the presentation context afterwards.

I always blatantly refused to do this and often times present for half an hour, with only 3 slides. (One welcome slide, an Agenda slide and a big thank you with contact details). If you want to know the contents, then pay attention instead of trying to read the presentation afterwards.

It's something you can learn.

Not having any powerpoint to work with actually helped me in learning how to present. It brings the attention to the presenter, rather than distracting attention to a screen.

Another very important factor next to "knowing your topic" is "Like your topic".

Try to present something you don't agree with... It doesn't work.

Tom, thanks for your comments. I couldn’t have said it better
myself. So many of my students struggle with the fact that their managers
insist on loading the presentation with content so it can be sent out later as
a document. I always say to them that this is ok--- as a document. But always
make sure to create a second, slimmed down version of the full document for
actually presenting, so that the audience is not lost looking at words on a
screen, when they should instead be focused on the speaker.

I also agree that having passion for your subject is key. If you
are presenting something because your ‘manager told you to do so’, you won’t
convey the message whole-heartedly. Your audience will sense this and not be
engaged.
