One of the best ways to show what Life is like at SAP is to share our employee stories to provide insight into their experiences and what being successful means to us at SAP. I am Heather Walker, and I work on the Global Employer Branding team. Over the last few months I have had the opportunity to speak with 50 colleagues across our Europe, Middle East and Africa region to help share their stories. Here is one of those interviews:

Rob was a HR Director in London before relocating to Switzerland with SAP and is now a Customer Engagement Executive for SAP SuccessFactors.

How did you get your current job?

One evening, at a diving conference, I mentioned to a fellow participant about the busy week at work I’d just had. She asked me what I did (I was working an HR Director) and then suggested to her husband who worked for SAP that I had the profile he needed for a CEE role in Switzerland - not the most conventional of approaches!

What skills do you feel helped you move from HR to your role with SAP?

I’d point to 3 skill sets for our role:

Emotional intelligence – you have to be able to empathise with the customer.

Consultancy skills – it’s important to understand customer issues, analyse the situation and then contact for delivery with them.

Project Management – It’s important to be able to work alongside the customer’s projects and influence their direction.

What does your career at SAP mean to you?

To me it means I help customers to build a better tomorrow for their people with SuccessFactors

What does success look like to you?

If I can deliver value to my customers in HR I know I’ve been successful.

If you could go back in time and give your 18-year-old-self one piece of career advice what would it be?

Have the courage to trust your intuition and don’t be afraid to challenge things.
