One of the best ways to show what Life is like at SAP is to share our employee stories to provide insight into their experiences and what being successful means to us at the company. I am Heather Walker, and I work on the Global Employer Branding team. Over the last few months I have had the opportunity to speak with 50 colleagues across our Europe, Middle East and Africa region to help share their stories. Here is an interview I did with Dane Hermse.
When not hiking or watching Netflix Dane, one of SAP’s Digital Presales Engineers, is building demos ready to showcase IoT, Blockchain and other technologies to make them more tangible.
When asked what this entails, Dane’s response was:
“Typically, building a demo involves programming, soldering, drilling, gluing, painting, but also fiddling with sensors, microcontrollers and other electric components. Not to forget a whole lot of cursing.”
So how did Dane become a Presales Engineer?
“Before joining SAP I worked as an in-house developer at one of SAP’s partner companies. Here I developed new functionalities, started a collaboration project with a local college and developed an IoT proof of concept for clothing stores.
During my study of Applied IT at the Erasmushogeschool Brussel, I followed a number of dedicated classes about SAP, ABAP and UI5.
As part of my job application, SAP sent me a sensor and gave me the task to think of, build and present a prototype with a business case. I had a lot of fun with the assignment and it gave me a good impression of what the job would consist of.
I chose to pursue a job with SAP, mainly because of the job content. Being able to build prototypes using the newest gadgets and technologies in combination with presenting them, is the perfect fit between technical abilities and soft-skills for me.
SAP has made a positive impact on my life because they give me the freedom, flexibility and learning opportunities to take charge of my development and my future.”
What advice would Dane give to anyone considering applying to SAP?
‘Put yourself in their shoes’. Figure out how you can help the company, but more important, how you can help people. This advice applies to a lot of different situations, but is still very important to me.
