A joint initiative with IBM, City of Antibes and SAP Labs France
Hyperconnectivity is the increasing digital interconnection of people – and things – anytime and anywhere.
By 2020 there will be 50 billion networked devices. This level of connectivity will have profound social, political and economic consequences, and increasingly form part of our everyday lives, from the cars we drive and medicines we take, to the jobs we do and the governance systems we live in, to even the business.
IoT is the bridge between the physical and digital worlds. In that hyperconnectivity context, SAP Labs France decided to invest on this strategic topic. The Security Research team of the labs is currently driving a great project on that major topic with the City of Antibes, IBM and Sigfox. The project focus more specifically on predictive maintenance, using IoT technologies to maintain is to optimize City of Antibes water distribution network.
The partnership
SAP LAbs France is benefiting from local ecosystem of partners specialised on Big data and IoT technologies in Sophia Antipolis Technopole and the new Eco-Valley. The project bring together a great consortium of public/ Private partners : IBM Nice, as SAP solution integrator, the C aity of Antibes, as use case provider, and SigFox, as global network provider of IoT.
The project itself : goal, objectives....
The project started in January 2015 and will last one year… One year to achieve one goal: predicate any failure in the water network, based on that real time information, together with static information such as geolocalisation, physical characteristics of the pipeline incident report
In the scope of this project, the research team uses the IoT service on HCP to secure gathering of real time information from water smart meters. Thedata will be collected thanks to more than 2000 sensors for debit, pressure, temperature, water storage level monitored by Veolia which is currently maintaining Water network of Antibes and finally, data stream will be analysed through Hana platform and a Hana Dashboard prototype to illustrate predictive maintenance of water network.
The latter has the following objectives :
1. Integration of water network geospatial information into HANA City of Antibes has a lot of information (location, age, reported incidents) related to their water network assets (pipeline, collectors, valve). The goal is to push that information into HANA and to display it on a map. For that integration, the team uses geospatial HANADB service.
2. Secure integration of water network real time information in HANA We also aim at collecting information coming from smart meter instrumenting the water meter (debit, pressure). The collection and processing of sensor data is delegated to the IoT service on HCP. In addition, City of Antibes has also a strong security requirement on the confidentiality of the information gathered from the smart meters. In order to fulfill that security requirement, we implement an end to end security cryptographic scheme. The goal is to preserve privacy of the City of Antibes, together with the privacy of their citizens’.
3. Predictive model for water network Based on static and realtime information, the team uses the SAP Predictive HANADB service for any failure detection.
...and the challenges for the future
This use case is a great opportunity to apply SAP solution on a real scale and extend its potential in association and interaction with IBM and Sigfox technologies. This project is also a great opportunity to collaborate with other R&D team from SAP, sharing results and output of other teams, like is being done on the Hana dashboard prototype. The results will be used hopefully for futurer co-innovation project on other field of application than water, water such as Smart Grids. Smart grids is a strategic subject for the territory which suffers from serious electric infrastructure disruption. There is also many potential for further development on data protection, device management, Access control to actuator…etc.
Visibility
The project has already been presented 2 times. One in Berlin in May, during a 2-day workshop event co – hosted by the Berlin Senate Department for Economics, Technology and Research, SAP SE and its customer, the Technical University of Berlin. Hanno Klausmeier, who leads SAP Labs in France, presented the predictive analytics scenario with water pipe systems managed via SAP HANA software.
