How to assign the selected value from characteristic on the first line while assigning characteristic in material ?

the selected value is 3M as shown below

it should be displayed in the blank space.

AFAIK there is no way to control the sequence of values exhibited in the 2nd screenshot. Why would you need that, why would you care about which value is on top if you have multiple values selected? What is the business requirement that you are trying to solve?
