At the end of last week I had a very stimulating trip to Berlin, where I participated in the SAP & AGILITA Workshop on SAP Build. It was an interesting event and I'm happy to share my takeaways with you.

Thursday November 27, 8:30 AM: I join my colleagues who arrived from Walldorf and Helsinki for a breakfast at our hotel, and we quickly head up to SAP Berlin office. Once there, together with the Berlin colleagues, we set up the event rooms we had booked for the keynote and then the hands-on workshop.

At 10.30, attendees start to arrive: we have the pleasure to welcome business users and developers from Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG), Bundesdruckerei, Stiftung Das Rauhe Haus, Hochschule für Technik und Wirtschaft Berlin as well as partners and a few SAP employees. All together, we engage discussions over a buffet of snacks before the event kicks off at 11.00 with our keynote, joined by many attendees on LinkedIn live and moderated by Esmeé.

Keynote and solution deep dive

Diana Roesner starts the keynote by introducing the Clean Core concept and explaining how SAP Build can be used to easily create side-by-side extensions to an SAP application. On this very important topic, I highly recommend you a new white paper - “Clean core extensibility for SAP S/4HANA Cloud” - and a crisp and easy-to consume learning journey - “Practicing Clean Core Extensibility For SAP S/4HANA Cloud”.

We then dive into the different components of the SAP Build solution, with my close colleagues Kanishka presenting SAP Build Process Automation and SAP Build Code, and Yumnah describing SAP Build Apps and SAP Build Work Zone. Jesse gives a great demo of how SAP Build can help 🎅🏻 Santa Company 🎄 streamline order approvals by creating an extension directly from his SAP S/4HANA ERP using our Extensibility Wizard. Finally Hemant provides an insightful perspective on how SAP Build supports line-of-businesses, including finance, procurement, supply chain, customer experience, human resources, IT and cross-functional:

Following the presentations, our experts held a Q&A session with the audience, answering the questions raised on-site as well as in the online chat:

We received very positive feedback from the audience on this session, which you can watch as a replay.

Hands-on Workshop

After a short break, we moved to another room for the hands-on workshop. In 3 hours, our local participants had the opportunity to create a full-stack application to improve customer loyalty. The purpose of the application is to allow customers to redeem points from their purchases. To do this, the application needs to access customer, purchase and product data from SAP S/4HANA.

Specifically, workshop participants experienced using SAP Build Code to create a back-end CAP service with Joule AI copilot, highlighting SAP's generative AI power for development. The customer loyalty application is connected to SAP S/4HANA Cloud as an extension to the ERP, so the participants learned how to use a BTP destination. And they used SAP Build Apps to create a mobile app, showcasing our modern low-code/no-code development tool.

This is the part of the event I was involved in, and I have to say it was great and rewarding to see our participants amazed at how Joule helped them create data entities, sample data and JavaScript code from simple prompts.  They really experienced the power of Generative AI that we showcased at SAP TechEd a few weeks ago!

If you would like to do this hands-on exercise and experience Joule by yourself, it’s very easy!

Indeed, it is available here in our Basic Trial environment, where you will have immediate access to all the tools needed: SAP Build Code - Generative AI-powered development with Joule copilot.

Christmas Market at AGILITA’s

At 16:00 we jumped into a bus who drove us to the AGILITA office in Berlin. There, AGILITA Christmas Market brought everyone together to reflect and share ideas in a festive atmosphere.

Thomas Neuhaus, Head of Digital Experience for AGILITA, presented SAP AppHaus Workshops: SAP and AGILITA are helping customers find the right path to digitalization with design and architecture thinking workshops. Customers discover how to integrate Al and innovation for their own use cases, and how to effectively improve their business processes.

We also had the opportunity to attend very interesting demos of applications developed by the AGILITA team with SAP Build, showing how tasks like recording time or logging work can happen in just 3 clicks:

Personal note

To end this blog post on a more personal note, I would like to say that I had 2 very energizing days in Berlin. I only work 3 days a week, Monday-Wednesday, but when I was asked if I could attend this event in Berlin on a Thursday, I didn't hesitate for a second: as I work 100% from home in Lyon, it was a great opportunity to meet up with colleagues from Berlin and Walldorf. The day after the event, we took time to reflect on what we did in 2024 and what we would like to do in 2025. This trip to Berlin was also a nice opportunity to meet great people from our valued partner AGILITA.

And when I was on my way back to Lyon on Friday evening, what caught my eye in the Berlin airport terminal?

On a big screen, an ad from SAP promoting our magical trifecta of Process + Data + AI 😊
