Insights on Enterprise Data Management Transformation in SAP by Maria Villar & Tina Rosario

Maintaining high quality data within both public and private cloud-based platforms becomes a much bigger issue for today’s CIO.  Information may now be shared across various solutions across the enterprise (ie Cloud, Hybrid) and that information needs to be replicated and distributed without causing a detrimental data quality impact or hinder the business processes.  If one process is running a light speeds while the other is running batch jobs companies won’t realize the full potential of your real-time business enterprise.  Planning the right enterprise information management is an important step to achieving accurate, valid and timely access to information.  In order to fully realize the benefits of cloud computing, CIOs should explore newer data integration strategies, approaches and technologies. 

Customers today interact with companies in a lot of different ways, using a variety of technologies, often simultaneously. Cloud and On-Premise applications build the platform to support the multi-channel customer experience.   For example, critical customer information like name and email is required to purchase on the online store, download a white paper and access technical support. So, shouldn’t that customer have a great experience with information that is correct and readily available regardless of interaction point?  That information may reside in CRM or in a website registration or in a cloud based marketing application. Today’s data integration capabilities ensure that customer data (or any other master data) and other information presides across the enterprise and is enriched, matched and standardized along the way.

More and more companies require the ability to move data from cloud-to-cloud, cloud-to enterprise, or intra-enterprise, as needed, to support the core business processes and customer experiences.  Information management technologies have evolved in the last several years around the trends in hybrid and multi-cloud architectures, as well as the rise of much larger data sets (big data). Solutions such as SAP’s HANA based enterprise information management (SAP HANA EIM) can be deployed on-premise, in the cloud or in a combined hybrid landscape to help make information ready for action in support of analytics, Big Data, Internet of Things, business process and compliance initiatives.

By enabling the process and data integration across the boundaries of cloud and on premise solutions CIOs can cut the cost of maintaining IT and keeping their systems secure and of information quality high. Instead of building hundreds or even thousands of point-to-point integrations, information can be published once for any number of consuming systems (Cloud based or On Premise or Hybrid). Interfaces between publishing and subscribing applications are now simply created and managed through the EIM management layer.  By decoupling data sources and destinations, applications are less process- interdependent, enabling downstream applications to better meet the data delivery and quality demands of the business.
