The world changes overnight, every night. At least that’s what I think every morning over a cup of coffee, scanning the news on the hottest of hot technology topics: Big Data. Disruptive technologies have a way of disrupting everything – including that war horse of an information management portfolio, the relational database management system (RDBMS).

In an SAPinsider article, SAP’s Terry Osborn makes the case for “revitalizing your database selection criteria.” While your organization may have years of experience in procuring RDBMS technology, times have changed.

  • Your RDBMS must fit with a growing set of information management technologies
  • You now have on-premise, cloud-based, and hybrid deployment options
  • Your RDBMS must support more users, bigger data volumes, and diverse data types
  • Your budget is even more constrained

Select Wisely: Five Factors to Consider When Assessing Relational Databases

Having presented the “why’s” of updating your guidelines got selecting an RDBMS, Osborn fleshes out five critical “what’s” to consider:

  • Reliability – Supporting multiple overlapping tactics to secure and safeguard data in either a single or multi-server topography
  • Adaptability – Adjusting to and optimizing variable OLTP and business intelligence workloads
  • Scalability – Using methods such as data compression, in-memory processing, database virtualization, and multi-processor server capacity to support a growing volume of data, users, and transactions
  • Predictability – Delivering predictable service levels – deploying quickly and without overhead, supporting variable workloads, and scaling easily
  • Manageability – Keeping  long-term administrative costs through automated tuning and error correction, intuitive tooling, and minimal training

There’s more detail on these selection criteria in “5 Factors to Consider When Selecting a Relational Database.” And, if RDBMS is on your radar, you might also be interested in learning more about the data and technology services.
