Material Group has not been defined error when using BAPI_SALESORDER_CHANGE

Hi all,

I was trying to update the contents of my Sales Order using 2 different methods:
1. SE37 using BAPI_SALESORDER_CHANGE

2. VA42(When the contract is updated, a custom code is calling BAPI_SALESORDER_CHANGE in the background to update all the related sales orders)

But ended up with the same results:

My team and I were not experiencing this error before. Is it possible that the material used in the Sales Order has been changed specifically in configuration side? Because this happens with new and old/existing sales orders.

The “Error in ITEM_IN_040000” is just pointing to the item line in your BAPI input. The real cause is material master data/config changes. Either the material group was deleted or the material is not extended to the sales org/distribution channel. Fixing the material master should resolve the error.

Material group 01 has not been defined (V1 582) indicates that the material group assigned to the material is missing or no longer maintained in the sales area/configuration. Since the issue occurs in both BAPI_SALESORDER_CHANGE and VA42, it is likely a master data or configuration issue rather than a BAPI issue.

So you get error 582(V1) on ITEM_IN line number 040000.

Check in your Customizing for material group '01' (table T023, transaction OMSF Define Material Group)
- Look for Utilities, Change Log ?
Check also definition in material master data
