Hello.

We are planning on decomissionimg a SAP ECC system and need to archive our historical data. Does anyone have any guidance on the best options for archiving data so its accessible as read only to users?

I have heard about ILM but understand this is an add on to existing SAP system and as we are decomissionimg SAP I'm trying to understand the best options of a separate archive for historical data.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Simon - there is data archiving that is part of ECC (not an add on component) - see https://blogs.sap.com/2019/12/09/introduction-to-data-volume-management-asug-webcast-summary/

You can also review the SAP Data Volume Management Guide at https://wiki.scn.sap.com/wiki/download/attachments/247399467/Data%20Volume%20Management%20User%20Guide_2020.pdf?version=1&modificationDate=1594652238000≈i=v2

Thanks for the info and the quick response. Appreciated.

With the data archiving option via DVM and then deleting the data from ECC so we can then decommission the system do you know what would be the best way to then access the archive via reports or technical transactions, what standard tools or software would I use to access the archive if I need access to the data for audit/legal purposes?

Thanks

Legal requirements differ; with some transactions you can still access the data by selecting a checkbox "access archive document only".

With SAP archived objects you can create info structures to access the archived data - that is standard for all SAP archived objects.

To learn more, SAP Press has archived books on the topic - or you can start with this blog from Paul Bakker, which got me started on archiving: https://blogs.sap.com/2016/03/07/how-to-archive-workflows/

Hi Simon,

When you say "as we are decommissioning SAP", do you mean, decommissioning SAP altogether or decommissioning an SAP ECC system within your SAP landscape?

Hi. We are decomissionimg SAP altogether so looking to understand how we can archive the SAP data so we can delete before decomissionimg and then have read only access to the archive via other software/portal/system etc

Hi Simon,

Since
you are decommissioning SAP altogether and there will be no SAP instance within
your landscape, archiving the data via SAP will not work. You will need to extract the
data from your SAP system at the database level and load/archive the data into another system where users
can access. You will need to use a database extraction tool for application
decommissioning.

Hi Dwight.

Thanks for the info and yes thats how I see it. We would need to extract and load into another system that users can access as we are decomissionimg the current sap system all together. But I'm not sure what the best options are for this i.e once we extract the data where to put it!. Do you have any advice for which system we could load the archived sap data into that users can access ?

Thanks

Hi Simon,

My suggestion would be to research a few application decommissioning products and based on that research choose the one that best satisfy your business
requirements.

Hi.

Yes will do, but just wanted to ask if there were any recommendations on systems/applications for data archiving from people who have done this before as I can then focus on researching these.
