Support for MYSQL8

Hello,

I have just downloaded PowerDesigner 16.7 to test the possibility of a reverse from MySQL 8 but i only see very old unsupported version in the sgbd list (MySQL 4.0 and MySQL 5.0).

I still do the reverse which works without problem, but some objects like primary key based indexes were missing... which is still very disturbing.

So my question is :

Is MySQL still supported by PowerDesigner ?

Thank you for your help !

Hi and welcome to
the SAP Community!

Thank
you for visiting SAP Community to get answers to your questions. Since you're
asking a question here for the first time, I recommend that you familiarize
yourself with https://community.sap.com/resources/questions-and-answers
(if you haven't already), as it provides tips for preparing questions that draw
responses from our members. For example, you can outline what steps you took to
find answers (and why they weren't helpful) and share screenshots of what
you've seen/done. The more details you provide, the more likely it is that
members will be able to assist you.

Should
you wish, you can revise your question by selecting Actions, then Edit
(although once someone answers your question, you'll lose the ability to edit
the question -- but if that happens, you can leave more details in a comment).

Finally,
if you're hoping to connect with readers, please consider adding a picture to

I can't answer for SAP about why they haven't upgraded support for MySQL (I suspect they don't think the demand is worth it).

According to the documentation, Erwin and ER/Studio also only support MySQL 5 - the difference with PowerDesigner is that you can do something about it. it's possible to extend support for a DBMS yourself, usually by copying and editing a similar feature from a different DBMS.

Possibly, somebody on this forum has already done it.

I will not purchase PowerDeisgner if it does not officially support the sgbd used by my company. That's why I will appreciate an official answer from SAP.

Thank you

Hi, I suggest using latest MySQL definition file supported, i.e. MySQL 5.0 (file mysql50.xdb) and use it to perform basic operations:

DDL generation of objects, that you commonly need to use in your models

Reverse engineering directly from the database

Reverse engineering from DDL scripts

If it works, great. If it doesn`t you can update this definition file in order to achieve better results. These three areas mentioned above, can be adjusted here:

DDL generation - MYSQL50::Script\Objects\Table\Create

Rev.engineering from DB - MYSQL50::Script\Objects\Table\SqlListQuery and SqlAttrQuery

Rev.engineering from script - MYSQL50::Script\Objects\Table\Create

To be able to adjust the functionality of your definition file, you will need following knowledge:

How and where MySQL 8.0 stores its metadata

SQL

GTL (Generation Template Language) - proprieatary macro language used in PowerDesigner for various generation task (DDL generation is only one of many use cases of GTL in PD)

I understand, that it might be time/effort consuming task. I have been doing similar customizations and development for last 14 years, so I can help you in case needed.

Based on my experience, this is the fastest way how to achieve your goal. On the other hand, forcing SAP to add support for your MySQL version could be even more effort consuming with really uncertain results.

HTH,

Ondrej
