Sybase drivers

Quick question.

I know we update the ODBC/JDBC drivers when patching. What other situations warrant ODBC/JDBC driver updates. Do we do it while upgrading Kernel in SAP because kernel has DB libraries also updated. Can someone please shed some light on this space. Thank you.

Hi Kalyana,

The kernel lib_dbsl and kernel update is independant of the database and JDBC driver patches. You need not do them at the same time.

The JDBC/ODBC drivers you can do when you are doing the normal database patches as per the following notes.

867976 - Changing JDBC driver on WEB AS Java 6.40/NW 7.0x/7.1x

1031096 - Installing Package SAPHOSTAGENT

1590719 - SYB: Updates for SAP Adaptive Server Enterprise (SAP ASE)

1598817 - SYB: Removal of sample client library applications

1607816 - SYB: Installing Service Packs for SAP ASE (Windows)

1982469 - SYB: Updating SAP ASE with saphostctrl / sapdbctrl

2075653 - Targeted ASE 16.0 Release Schedule and CR list Information

2162735 - SYB: Performing a major ASE upgrade (Windows)

I have as an example now patch my database with method described in note 1607816. And now for my dual stack and portal systems I am using note 867967 to figure out how to patch my JDBC drivers.

Also I patched my kernel while back without touching the DB version.

Hi Kalyana,

I have figured it out, as part of the normal sybase patching upgrades. There is a file you use. The below version of file in my case.

ASEBC1600001_2-20012478.SAR -> ASE 16.0 FOR BUS. SUITE DBCLIENT SP01 PL02

If you have extracted the driver as in my case in the location:

<drive>:\usr\sap\<SID>\SYS\global\syb\NTAMD64\

You have updated the driver successfully.

In my case 16.0.0.1 had a jconn4.jar file published 22 April 2014.

The systems where I have already patched the file has been updated to 30 June 2015.

In my opinion the note 867976 - Changing JDBC driver on WEB AS Java 6.40/NW 7.0x/7.1x should be renamed to a troubleshooting note along with 1893665 - SYB: Message "JZ0C1" - IOException " in Web AS Java.

Hope this answers your questions , I will be patching my portal and dual stack PI systems in the next couple of days. Will be able to give you a better answer then.
