SAP Data Archiving

Hi,

I need to archive some of the tables which are growing indefinitely ACCTIT, EDIDC.. etc.. we don't have any archiving solutions. If we archive the contents of this table can we access the contents of archive item at later time. Do we need to implement archiving solution.

Hi James,

For SAP data archiving, you do not necessarily need to implement an "archiving solution". You can use a filesystem to store the archive files. But, realize that you would then need to manage the files manually and the files are not secure.

Hi James,

If you are planning take data off from SAP database and you require to follow any legeal complainces then its good to implement SAP Archiving. You have to think it from auditing & taxing point of view before taking decision, but SAP recommendation is for "Archiving Solution" in your scenario, else if you do not have any legeal requirements for keeping data then you can take file system as option.

Hi James,

Missed some point, after implementing Archiving Solution you can retrieve data from SAP through standard transaction codes or some reports with slight modifications. We can also retrive the archived data from file system as well with same effort required for "Archiving Solution".

Thanks for reply.. the archiving plan is not specific to the tables I mention. we want to use it as for every possile data we can offload from SAP database. Any generic notes reference of doc. kindly share.

Let me explain something... Archiving should never be done to reduce the size of the database (this is just a consequence), is done to improve the performance of the system. Also its much more complex than just throw data into a external repository, as mentioned before this needs to be carefully planned to accomplish the best results achieving all legal requirements.

thanks.. we are planning to have archiving solution in place which can be use for both performance improvement and offloading data from database.

Hi James,

In general there are no SAP notes to analyse the system database. We will have to analyse the system database completely and comeup with the largest tables from system and then need to identify archiving objects for those tables. also we need to make sure those are the valid archiving objects before implementing.

Also in parallel you also have to think of the archiving landscape, which is suitable for you.
