We are currently trying to move our Business Objectu2019s repository databases from one Oracle database server to new Oracle RAC database server. So far we have tried to shutdown the BO apps, export/import the databases into the new Oracle environment and re-point the source in BO, but this has been unsuccessful. We are fairly new to BO and we were wondering how we could migrate these database(s). Is there a BO document to do this??? So far we have had trouble searching the web site for such a document. If you could guide us through this process that would be much appreciated.

Cheers,

Julien

Julien , you dont need to do that

Business objects system can do that for you, there a shortcut to "Repository Migration Wizard"

find it with your business objects installation,

refer to the source, and to the destination and it will migrate it for you.

find this

http://help.sap.com/businessobject/product_guides/boexir2/en/datasourcemigration.pdf

good luck

Amr

Julien.

Are you referring to moving the cms and audit databases? If so, then your initial procedure should have worked. What error did you get after repointing the cms data source to the new Oracle database? Is the XI server Windows or Unix, and what patch level? The tool you use to repoint the cms datasource also has the ability to migrate your existing database to a new database. The exact instructions are slightly different based on whether your XI server is Windows or Unix based, however both are fairly straight forward. On windows you would run the CCM (Cental Configuration Manager). On unix you would run the cmsdbsetup.sh script.

--Jack

However Srinivas replied saying "the "Repository Migration Wizard" has actually nothing to do with migrating repositories. This tool is used to update repository objects if you have CE 9 or Crystal Reports 9."

I'm confused.

Anyway, i'll have a read through at the document you sent through.

Thanks,

Julien

I think we are all confusing the term repository. I believe Julien is not using the term properly. I believe in Classic BO repository was referred to as the system database, however in XI it is not. Repository in XI is a database location of special report objects and I believe that is what the document Amr sent is talking about. I think Julien is only concerned with migrating his system (cms) database. In this case you would using the cms copy tool built in to the CCM on windows or cmsdbsetup.sh on Unix.

--Jack

Jacques is correct. Your original method should have worked. That is why I also asked for the error you received when starting you cms after repointing to the new cms data source. You can also use the method I described and let the XI tools do all the copying of the content from the source database server to the destination database server.

--Jack

Julien,

You are right. The error indicates that the tns name you entered when configuring the data source for the cms has not been configured in your tnsnames.ora file and your oracle client cannot find the connection information.

Once you have updated the tnsnames.ora file with the new db connection info, you should be able to use the oracle tnsping command to ping the db using the tnsname or you can try to connect via the sqlconnect tool provided by Oracle client tools. Once you are successful with the ORacle connection tools, then run the data source tool again in the CCM with the correct tnsname, user, and password.

--Jack

Julien,

The XI data source copy tool will not work unless your Oracle client is configured correctly to connect to the new destination database server. So you need to be certain you tnsnames.ora file has been updated correctly and then use the Oracle provide command line connection tools to verify your Oracle client can connect to the new database. Once you have confirmed the client is configure correctly, rerun the data source wizard in the CCM and try to start the CMS and hopefully it will start without error. If is still gives an error, let us know what it says.

--Jack

Julien, In your last post you mention Oracle ODBC, I hope this is just a typo. You should be using the native oracle client for the cms database. I do not think we even support an Oracle ODBC connection for the cms, only for your reporting database. The error message indicates that the oracle client cannot find the specified db server, however tnsping should fail as well.

Can you try to just go to a Windows command prompt window. Do not set any environment variables or run any environmnet scripts. Run the follwing commands and past the output in this forum thread. Replace "tnsname" with the actual tnsname you are using when running the data source connection in the CCM.

C:\tnsping tnsname

C:\sqlplus username/password@tnsname

ok then try this.

Create a blank CMS DB in the new oracle location.

Then connect the CMS and oracle middleware to the new connection. It should start up fine in few seconds. (It will actually create the tables but we will overwrite them)

Once you verified that you can hit the new instance use the CCM to copy the data source

to do this stop the cms, double click the CMS (or right click properties), click configuration tab, then specify, finally selecting copy data from another data source.

Backup the original DB just in case and make sure you don't get the DB's backwards, I've seen that happen(If you get them backwards you will in effect delete your source DB).

So the source is the original DB the destination is the new one.

When it's done you should be able to start your CMS with the new Oracle DB.

Regards,

Tim

Hi Tim,

Thanks for your information.

My DBA has changed some setting on the actual Oracle Parameter. He has updated local_listener to point to the new RAC server and the following test suceeded.

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator>sqlplus bo_owner/xxx@boxi

SQL*Plus: Release 10.2.0.1.0 - Production on Thu Aug 21 13:01:19 2008

Copyright (c) 1982, 2005, Oracle. All rights reserved.

Connected to:

Oracle Database 10g Enterprise Edition Release 10.2.0.4.0 - 64bit Production

With the Partitioning, Real Application Clusters, OLAP, Data Mining

and Real Application Testing options

SQL>

It seems very positive for me to change the datasource of CMS to the new server now. If the change is not successful, then i will test using your suggested approach.

Julien

since your on the same machine it should work either way. Just thought we could try the CCM DB copy to see what was going wrong.

good luck
