Can anyone tell me what is the purpose of required field property in MDM?

Hi,

a required field requires input in e.g. Data Manager, otherwise you won't be able to save the record. You have to fill it out. This is useful for e.g. item numbers.

hi,

if we kept any filed any filed as required then if we didnot give any value then we canot able to save the record.

but in the 5.5.42.106 version it is not working

Hi Narendra,

Required fields set the fields as mandatory i.e. it wont allow you to keep the field value NULL. But making the field Required wont make it mandatory, you need to create a validation expression REQUIRED_FIELDS and set the Automatic Execution to Error.

Is REQUIRED_FIELDS function in MDM?

I could not see that function in validation expression.

Please tell me how to use that function?

Just type "REQUIRED_FIELDS" as expression. It does not appear in any of the drop-down menus. Then click ok. Executing the validation will automatically validate all the fields flagged as "Required field".

Hi Narendra,

REQUIRED_FIELDS is the Validation expression used to activate the required property in MDM.

When you make the field as required in console it will still allow you to leave it blank in MDM data manger unless you make this property active.

For this:

- Create a validation in MDM data manger

- In the validation expression box just write REQUIRED_FIELDS

- Make the exceution to Error type.

- Save the validations

So now whenever you try to create a record in MDM with the required field a blank it will throw you an error message nad not let you proceed untill you fill in that value.

Hi Narendra ,

This function is not given in MDM .But u can write the function in Data manager as given in the MDM Console guide page no.126 under req field topic.U just have to give the name of the field under the brackets.

But this will work in higher patches only like 5.5.63.33.It is given the latest data manager guides page no.240.

Hi Simona,

I did as you said and the function is working for required fields and non-required fields too.

I did filled data in required fields but still getting error message saying that validation error.

How to avoid this problem?

Hi,

If u have tried this format

REQUIRED_FIELD(Field Name)

U have to give the name of the field name for which u have done "Required " as yes.

Just try as i am having a lower version so i cat try it.Just update aftr wards.

Hello Narendra,

Here is the purpose of Required field properties as SAP recommended:

The Required field parameter is not a mandatory but an advisory property.

In other words, it is different from u201CNOT NULLu201D definition of the RDBMS world. Its purpose is to let the creation of validation rules treat all u201CRequiredu201D fields at once.

Such validation expression is not available yet but will be exposed in coming versions.

The advantage of this approach is when your validation logic is changed and you decide the field should or should not participate in the validation you simply change the value of u201CRequiredu201D. Otherwise every validation expression should be changed manually.

Correct me if I am wrong.

Hi Narendra,

Required field is always used in conjuction with the validation expression to ensure that the field has value. For this you only need to specify a field as required and add the function REQUIRED_FIELDS() in the validation expression.

But this works only when you are manually adding the value to data manager.This scenario doesnt work when you are automatically importing some records. The validation expression doesnt stop those records from getting imported.
