Blocking Hazardous Materials for Purchasing with HSM

Dear,

In the sap documentation, I've read about a scenario to block materials for purchasing based on the risk assessment in HSM. In the scenario you would block a substance in a work area. Next, a transfer program would transfer that block onto the linked material masters and the material would get blocked for purchasing in the relevant plant.

Problem: I can't seem to find the relevant objects in the IMG. For example, I find no reference to the "transfer program" or see no IMG activity that can be used to set this up.

So my question is whetehr you know if this is standard functionality or does this require a development. If it is standard, could you just point me to one of the IMG activities?

I am not sure about your thread. Therefore I will write done what I do know about SAP Standard:

a.) with SAP EH&S a submodule is available which is called SAP HSM

b..) This submodele uses SAP EH&S BD and PS (BasiC Data and Tools and product Safety).

c.) later on a so called "hazardous substance master" (similar to dangerous goods master) is created in the application

d.) This data can now be used together with WM/eWM processes. To my knowledge this is not "direct" related to what is called "risk assessment" in EHS IHS and to my knowledge not related to the work area.

Hi Christoph,

Many thanks for the information on the flexible hazardous substance check. This will be very helpfull! The process I was looking for though, is not related to the Inventory Mgmt or Warehouse Mgmt (on tranfer orders), but to the creation of a Purchase Order.

One of the old sap libraries talks about: "You place a purchase block on new materials that you do not consider to be rated from a hazardous substance standpoint. When you have rated the materials, you release them for purchasing." (http://help.sap.com/SCENARIOS_BUS2004/helpdata/EN/53/d5fa40badbf56fe10000000a1550b0/frameset.htm)

In the official course material there's an exercise where you can trigger the above block from the substance in the risk assessment. This scenario seems really interesting, but I can't seem to find how where it's set up, so I'm starting to think this is a development... .

I believe the functionality you describe is the "old" one which is not used very often to my knowlegde and in some sense it is "obsolete" and to my knowlegde not supported any more.

the "blocking" is not mentioned any more (now you would use the "flexible hazardous substancechecks" (refer to the link as provided) (you need ECC 6.0; EnPack 3 activated !! in EH&Sarea to use the checks). If you take a look here:

Thanks again for your valuable input. But still I'm looking for something different. As I understand it, the "flexible checks" are used on your Inventory Management or Warehouse Management processes. They are not used in the Purchasing process. I'm looking for a way to influence the purchase process based on hazardous materials... .

This (these entries) is a entry in the ES workspace of SDN and is related to EH&S Enterprise Services. Some years ago SAP has provided SOA oriented EH&S solutions. You will find there a subelement named:

Hazardous Material Administration

I have read cross. I am not sure if this is what you are looking for but it might be a starting point. We have never investigated these solutions so I can not share more informations.

In any case: I am sorry. I have no further info regarding your topic. I can provide only some hints:

a.) the DG management is integrated in SD processes (delivery, transport etc:) and not purchasing and it is related to dangerous goods management and not hazardous substance management

b.) EH&S SVT is integrated in purchasing and sales etc. processes but not dealing with "hazardous substances" but to take care about REACH topics. here you can prepare a setup to in such a way that a blocking occurs in purchasing process if necessary

c.) in "theory" you could try to integrate SAP GTS in your processes; but there is no interface between SAP EH&S HSM and SAP GTS (only SAP EH&S SVT and SAP GTS) and therefore you need to maintain data in SAP GTS on the top; I would not invest time to analyze this option

indicating that there seems to be a process available in procurement process to check whether a MSDS is available from supplier and if not to "stop" purchasing; I found no further evidence regarding this process any more in other SAP documents

You will find a number of hints how to "release a purchase order"; some of the options are using workflow etc. techniques;

I believe this might be the story: you need to prepare a suitable cusotmizing set up in Purchase Order process of SAP MM; in doing so e.g. based on material type which are "hazardous" or "Dangerous" (refer to SAP EH&S standard etc.) you can implement a "release strategy"; therefore an "expert" will get e.g. a notification; this expert can check e.g. existance of MSDS of vendor etc. only if all data is there the purchase order is released by the expert; this strategy can be refined in such a way (to my knowledge) what item lines of purchase order can be released and other not.

I believe this is what SAP is referring to as a "blocking" mechanism in MM process. As this process is only "indirect" related to EH&S processes may be you need to consult a SAP MM consultant how to use thos "release procedure of a purchase order"

Hello Christiaan,

I just have seen your question regarding the scenario "...block materials for purchasing based on the risk assessment in HSM...".

It is possible to block materials from purchasing by using an appropriate material status. How this can be done is described in the documentation of the following IMG activity:

logistics - general => material master => settings for key fiels => define MATERIAL STATUS

This IMG documentation describes the impact of the material status at the material master regarding purchasing of materials (block puchasing).

The scenario you have seen in the EH&S HSM training is based on a consulting package, which - unfortunately - does not exist any longer and the development of this consulting package was not taken over into the EH&S standard functionality. So, you have the following option:

a) manually set the puchasing block

Set manually the corresponding material status in the material master to block the purchasing of materials which are not allowed to purchase.

b) custom development

Implement a BAdI of the EHS HSM component or develop a customer ABAP report (as you have probably seen it in the training) to update the material status of specific materials in the material master, according to the risk assessment results for these materials in EHS HSM.

It's a pity that this consulting package doesn't exist anymore.
