Hi,

There might be a scenrio where the Customer is / are including a field / fields which is not part of the Standard Idoc. In this case, there is option wherein we can extend the Idoc by inserting the desired field.

Some of the examples wherein extension of the IDoc is needed.

1. Adding few extra fields in customer master screen / material master screen. The master data is to be distributed across various systems using ale/edi, in this case you will extend the existing basic idoc with the new fields that are added .

2. When your customers want date and invoice number on advanced shipment notice document.

3. Suppose you are sending sales order data to legacy but your legacy system requires some engineering details in addition. In this case

you extend your basic idoc with this new engineering information fields.

  Hope above would help.

  Regards

     Kiran

There may be situations where in the standard IDOC may not be sufficient for your requirement.

In such cases you might need to have some segments added to the standard IDOC.

SAP has provided you an option to extend the idoc to add new segments.

Here is the complete procedure to do the same:

http://help.sap.com/saphelp_erp2004/helpdata/en/dc/6b7d6243d711d1893e0000e8323c4f/frameset.htm

Regards,

Ravi

Usually enhancement takes place when the content in IDocs provided by SAP are not sufficient for the business process. IDoc extension can take place whenever dictionary table has a new structure appended required by the business process.

In brief IDoc extension takes place when extra fields are required for the business process.

Check this link:

http://www.saptechnical.com/Tutorials/ALE/IDOCExtension/IDOCExtension.htm

hi when standard idoc is not sufficient for the requirement then we will create the extension for that idoc by creating the segment in the tcode we21 ...and we need to develoupe a z function module for this ...and this function module is attached to the standard idoc by the process code .. this should be done in the tcode WE42
