Display Excel without using an ALV

I want to display an excel report to the user without using an ALV grid. I want it to be similar to GUI_UPLOAD but instead of it saving to disk I want it to open excel and show the report. Is this possible?

That FM is obsolete is ECC 6.

It is obsolete but it still works. I believe you are supposed to use a method from class CL_GUI_FRONTEND_SERVICES.

method execute, or exe or...?
