Have a look at the SAP help [glossary|http://help.sap.com/saphelp_erp60_sp/helpdata/en/35/2a29e7d9685cd5e10000009b38f974/content.htm]:

Cross-Application Components (CA)

An object that refers to all data objects (tables, entities or processes) that relate to more than one business application.

Examples of cross-application components are ALE and Workflow.

Other examples are: CATS, Data Archiving, Document Management, etc.
