With the advent of ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning), it

is important to realise that when ERP solutions such as

SAP are implemented, companies have to interface the ERP

system with legacy systems, other ERP systems, customers’

system, vendors’ system, or banks’ system. Customers

often use several R/3 systems. This could be due to

organisational or business reasons (if a customer has

several plants all around the world, for example) or

technical reasons (the data volume or system load is too

large for single R/3 system). In many cases, data has to

be exchanged between these systems. There has been an

increasing and critical need for powerful interfacing

technology.

Decentralized business applications ensuring data

consistency are used because:

• The increasing globalisation of markets has led to the

physical division of organizational units.

• Business processes are not restricted to one

organization only and more and more customers and

vendors are becoming involved.

• R/3 System performance can be improved by distributing

the business applications.

Application Link Enabling and Electronic Data Interchange

(EDI) technologies play a key role in the extension of

enterprise processes across multiple R/3 and non-R/3

systems.

Application Link Enabling (ALE) is SAP’s proprietary

technology that enables data communications between two

or more SAP R/3 systems, and/or SAP R/3 and external

systems. ALE provides intelligent mechanisms whereby

clients can achieve integration as well as distribution

of applications and data.
